NANAKULI — Mark Lagazo had himself a ball game Friday.

The Kailua senior had four total touchdowns in his first start at quarterback to lead Kailua to a 34-21 road win at Nanakuli in an Oahu Interscholastic Division I Red game before a crowd of about 800 fans on a blustery evening.

The Surfriders, who are ranked 10th in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, rallied from an early deficit with 27 consecutive points to improve to 2-1.

Lagazo, a running back-turned-quarterback, threw for 114 yards on an efficient 5-of-7 passing with two touchdowns and rushed 19 times for 100 yards with two other scores.

Nanakuli took an early 7-0 lead on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Nainoa Banks to Joey Vea-Quitog, but trailed 21-7 by halftime and never recovered despite a standout effort from wide receiver Chyson Morgan, who caught five passes for 143 yards and rushed for 44 yards on five carries. Morgan scored on a 90-yard kickoff return and hauled in a 79-yard touchdown pass from Banks that closed out the scoring with 9:35 left in the game.

Kailua finished with 389 yards of total offense, including 275 rushing. Kealoha Hanawahine-Wong had game-highs of 25 carries for 111 yards.

Despite the victory, Surfriders coach Joseph Wong was anything but pleased with his team's performance.

"It feels good, but not nearly as good as it should because we made too many mistakes, turnovers, so I'm not happy at all," Wong said. "It's a win, but you set a precedent of how you want them to play and I won't take anything less than that."

Starting quarterback Keoni Serikawa broke his collarbone in a 42-7 loss to Farrington two weeks ago, which has thrust the 5-foot-8, 180-pound Lagazo in the role. His first two pass attempts Friday both went for touchdowns.

Lagazo found tight end Christian Mejia along the left seam for a 25-yard score to culminate Kailua's first possession and capped its next with his 16-yard TD pass to Hapaki Kupahu-Phillips for the go-ahead score with 26 seconds left in the first quarter.

Lagazo said the bye week came a good time for the Surfriders.

"We were preparing hard because we were coming off of a loss and we knew we had to come back strong," he said.

After scoring on its first drive, Nanakuli's next two ended with punts and the third was halted by a fumble that was recovered by defensive end John Sniffen for the Surfriders.

On the very next play, Lagazo found a running lane along the left sideline for a 35-yard TD.

Kailua held the ball for nearly seven minutes on its second drive after halftime, which was highlighted by Lagazo's 9-yard TD run on a scramble that gave his team a 27-7 lead. The drive covered 90 yards in 11 plays — all runs — and included a 7-yard pick-up by Lagazo on fourth-and-2.

"That guy is an animal and he's running behind more animals," Golden Hawks coach Keala Watson said. "Kailua is a really tough team."

Nanakuli made a two-score game on Morgan's TD return on the ensuing kickoff, but Kailua got an insurance score on special teams.

Mejia, a First Team All-Hawaii defensive end, blocked a Nanakuli punt and scooped it up for a 15-yard touchdown return to stretch the lead back to 34-14.

Banks threw for 158 yards, but completed just 6 of 20 passes and was intercepted twice.

Dakota Kadooka and Tanner Wright each intercepted a pass and John Sniffen recovered a Nanakuli fumble for the Surfriders.

The Golden Hawks fell to 0-4 overall, 0-3 in league games.
