MILILANI — So much for that.

A season-opening showdown between prep football powers Saint Louis and Mililani was cancelled due to darkness after just one quarter of play Saturday night.

Just minutes before the scheduled kickoff time of 6:30 p.m., power was lost at the Trojans' John Kauinana Stadium, knocking out the scoreboard and stadium lights. However, the game started as planned with the official time kept on the field.

Ultimately, the officiating crew deemed it was too dangerous to continue play after the conclusion of the first quarter (at 7:02 p.m.) and teams were sent to their respective sidelines with Saint Louis holding a 7-0 lead.

The power flickered on and off several times over the next 20 minutes, but after it was apparent the lights would fail to remain on, an official call was made by the Mililani administration to cancel the game at 7:30 p.m.

Because it was a non-league game and both teams don't have a coinciding open date, the game will not be made up.

The lone score came with 1:41 left in the first quarter on a 15-yard touchdown run by Jahred Silofau. The Crusaders started the drive with a short field — at the Mililani 36-yard line — after Isaiah Feary recovered a Trojans' fumble forced by teammate Isaiah Taliulu.

On the very next play, Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa carved his way through the Mililani defense for a would-be 36-yard touchdown run, but a holding penalty wiped away the score. Three plays later, Silofau rumbled his way to paydirt, shedding three tacklers on the way.

The Crusaders, who lost to Kahuku in the Division I state title game last November and are ranked second in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, had 123 yards of total offense on 19 plays from scrimmage to 14 plays for 43 yards for the seventh-ranked Trojans.

Tagovailoa, a University of Alabama commit, completed 9 of 12 passes for 74 yards, while Mililani sophomore Dillon Gabriel was 2-of-5 passing for 11 yards with one interception (by Saint Louis' Jalen Saole).

Trojans freshman offensive lineman Sergio Muasau was ejected from the game late in the first quarter after he was deemed to have thrown a punch at a Saint Louis player.

Mililani coach Rod York confirmed that Muasau will have to serve the league-mandatory one-game suspension and will miss Saturday's Oahu Interscholastic Association opener against Kaiser.

It was the second time in three seasons that a non-league game between the Crusaders and Trojans did not go as planned. In 2014, Hurricane Iselle forced the postponement of the season-opener between the teams, but was made up a week later because both teams had an open date. Mililani won that game, 63-47.

The last time the teams had faced off prior to Saturday night was in last year's state tournament, when Saint Louis pulled away for a 56-30 semifinal victory.

The Crusaders do not play again until Aug. 20, when they visit Hilo for a non-league game at Dr. Francis Wong Stadium.
