Kamehameha drilled nine 3-pointers to fend off Maryknoll, 55-50 at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium to capture its first win in league play Wednesday night.
The Warriors, ranked eight in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Boys Basketball Power Rankings, avoided starting the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I season with three losses and improved to 1-2 and 8-8 overall.
After going 17-2 in the preseason, seventh-ranked Maryknoll (0-3, 17-5) dropped its third straight contest to begin league play.
Kaeler Kahana led the sharpshooting from outside with three treys to finish with 17 points. The senior guard also went 8-for-12 from the free throw line in the Warriors' win.
Also with multiple made 3-pointers for the Warriors were Jayden Zariello and Kamren Victorino-Kato, who each had two and finished with eight and seven points respectively. Fatu Sua-Godinet, who was playing in his first game since suffering an ankle injury in the Iolani Classic, also knocked down a triple and finished with seven points.
Hayato Kamata scored 13 points and Michael Mercado-Smith added 10 more to lead the Spartans in the loss.
Kamehameha trailed 24-21 at the break before using a 21-5 third quarter to take a 42-29 lead heading into the final period of play.
