WAIPIO — Extra innings provided a chance at redemption for Noah Shackles.

Not long after his throwing error allowed the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth, Shackles ignited Mid-Pacific's two-run eighth inning in a thrilling 5-3 win over Saint Louis Saturday afternoon. A crowd of about 100 at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park saw the Owls (9-2-1) battle the Crusaders (8-3) in a back-and-forth Interscholastic League of Honolulu game.

"We came back a couple of times, they came back a couple times. It was a knock-down, drag-out fight today," Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru said.

Saint Louis, ranked second in the ScoringLive/OC16 Baseball Power Rankings, took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Devon Stubblefield's two-out single plated Jordan Yamamoto for the tying run. One batter later, Stubblefield took off for second when a low throw by Shackles couldn't be handled, allowing the go-ahead run to score from third.

Mid-Pacific, No. 3 in this week's power rankings, answered with a run in the top of the seventh to tie it and send it into extras. Ryne Yamashiro, the Owls' No. 9 batter, singled and Jarrod Infante, who pinch ran for him, advanced to second on a wild pitch. Bryce Nagata followed with an RBI double to left center that plated Infante.

"We kind of missed some signs and we made a couple errors, so we kind of gave it away, then took it back," Muramaru said. "It was kind of a back and forth — they gave us that run, too — so it wasn't a well-played game, I guess you could say in that sense, but it was a good spectator game."

Chase Wago, who pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Noah Sills. walked a pair of Crusaders in the bottom of the seventh, but neither reached second.

Shackles then led off the top of the eighth with a single up th emiddle and was advanced to second on a sacrfice bunt by Tyler Yamaguchi.

"I picked up his pattern — I knew what he was going to do — so I figured that I just needed something to get it through the infield and it went through," Shackles said of Saint Louis starter Pono Anderson.

A wild pitch by Anderson allowed Sean Kinei, who was courtesy running for Shackles, to move to third before Ryan Kiyotoki drew a walk to put runners at the corners. Mid-Pacific then executed a double steal with Kiyotoki breaking for second base. Rayson Romero, the Crusaders' shortstop, cut off catcher Taylor Meilleur's throw to second and fired back home to Meilleur, who was unable to make the play on an on-coming Kinei at home. Jarrett Lum's double to right one batter later plated Kiyotoki, who had advanced to third on the throwing error by Romero.

"I just saw the ball and I just swung," said Lum, who batted 2 for 3. "I was trying to hit something up to drive the run in from third base."

Shackles, who batted 2 for 4 in the game, said the win was a morale-booster for the Owls, who have now won three straight since dropping back-to-back games last weekend.

"This is real satisfying, especially after the last couple of weeks when we were kind of not ourselves, so to come back and get this win was kind of key to get back on that winning streak and just get rolling around," Shackles said.

The bottom half of the Mid-Pacific lineup accounted for nine of its 12 hits. Kiyotoki, the seventh batter, went 2 for 3 and Yamashiro went 2 for 4.

"It was big, because we had guys clutch-up that don't usually clutch-up," Shackles said. "When our key guys aren't coming through all the time, it's good to have someone else who will pick you up."

Sills pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He struck out two and walked none. Wago was the winning pitcher.

"He did an excellent job, he held them down," Lum said of Sills. "We really played for him."

Anderson took the loss for the Crusaders. He was responsible for all five Owls' runs and allowed 12 hits.

Mid-Pacific, which remains in first place, hosts Iolani Tuesday, while second-place Saint Louis takes on Pac-Five Tuesday and Iolani Wednesday.
