Sugar Mill Senior Classic set for Memorial Day

The 13th Sugar Mill Senior Classic all-star baseball game is set for 1 p.m. Monday at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.

The game, which pits recent high school graduates from around the state, is sponsored by Hawaii Athletic Consultants, LLC.

Some pro prospects and Division I-bound players are expected to take part in the classic, which started in 1999 by former Kansas City Royals scout Eric Tokunaga. That game featured future big leaguers Shane Victorino, Jerome Williams and Chad Santos. The tournament is now run by Casey Onaga, who also scouts locally for Tampa Bay.

Among those listed to play are Saint Louis outfielder/pitcher Kaeo Aliviado, Kailua catcher Alan Baldwin and Moanalua third baseman Jordan DePonte. All have signed with the University of Hawai'i. Also scheduled to play are Campbell pitcher Robert Kahana and Mid-Pacific shortstop Justin Protacio; both have signed with Kansas. Others headed to D1 schools are Iolani pitcher Carlos Rodriguez (Oregon State) and Saint Louis third baseman/pitcher Kalei Contrades (Oregon State).

Batting practice starts at 10:15 p.m. with infield/outfield warmups scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
