Top-seeded Hawai'i Baptist sweeps past Kahuku

Michael Fisher slammed 13 kills and served three aces and Chad Barretta also had 13 kills to go with three blocks last night as�Hawai'i Baptist swept Kahuku, 25-9, 25-21, 25-16 in the first round of the New City Nissan/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division II Boys Volleyball State Championships.

The No. 1 seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu DII champ Eagles improved to 15-3 in the regular and postseason and will face No. 4 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation DII champion Kohala (16-0) in today's 7 p.m. semifinal at McKinley's Student Council Gym.�

No. 2 seed and O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference champ Castle (16-0) will play No. 3 seed and maui Interscholastic League Division II champion Seabury Hall (9-1) in the other semifinal at 5.

Fisher, a 6-foot, 6-inch sophomore outside hitter, started the match with a kill and then served seven straight points -- including a pair of aces -- to spark HBA to a stunning 8-0 lead. Barretta, a 6-4 junior outside hitter, then notched three kills and Fisher added two more as the Eagles stretched it to 18-4.

The second set was much closer, as Shairone Thompson's block closed it to 14-13, and a net violation by Hawai'i Baptist later made it 21-19. But Fisher got a kill and Mason Ohta later had an ace before John Kuioka finished it off with a kill.

The Eagles started strong again in the third set, taking leads of 8-4, 10-5, 14-6 and 18-10 before completing the sweep.

Kalei Hosaka led the HBA defense with 18 digs.

Shairone Thompson led the Red Raiders (12-6) with nine kills, two blocks and nine digs and Joaquin Lessary added seven kills, three blocks and seven digs.

Kohala def. Waimea 25-22, 26-24, 25-19

Christopher Roxburgh and Donald Wong, Jr. each had 13 kills and Kulia Aveiro-Kalaniopio added 15 digs as the Cowboys swept past the Menehunes.

Waimea (9-5) jumped out to leads of 5-1 and 10-5 to open the match but Kohala responded with a 9-1 run to take a 14-11 lead. The Menehunes then tied it up at 17-17 before the Cowboys surged ahead with a 5-1 run to go up, 22-18.�

Waimea closed it to 22-21 on a block by Jonathan Tangalin, but Kohala answered with a kill by Roxburgh, who later ended the set with another kill.

The Menehunes led the second set 21-15 before the Cowboys staged another comeback, as Roxburgh notched three kills and Wong added two kills to help Kohala close it out with an 11-3 run, including five straight points at the end with Wong's kills sandwiched around three Waimea errors.

The Cowboys jumped out to leads of 11-6 and 14-8 in the third set the Menehunes scratched their way back and eventually tied it at 18-18. Kohala then went on a 6-0 run sparked by Roxburgh's two kills and a block and closed it out with Elias Hood's kill.

Kulia Aveiro-Kalaniopio led the Cowboys defense with 15 digs.

Kevin Killermann led Waimea with 11 kills and four blocks and Kalen McCracken added seven kills and two blocks.

Seabury Hall def. Lanakila Baptist 25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16

Conner Snow had 17 kills and Rocky DeLyon added 14 kills and six aces as the Spartans overtook the Warriors at Maryknoll.

Delyon served eight straight points -- including four aces -- as Seabury Hall jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the first set and later stretched the lead to 18-9 after an ace by David Dunn.

Lanakila Baptist (11-9) led the second set, 10-4, before the Spartans rallied to tie it at 13-13. The Warriors later evened the match at a game apiece after kill by Chad Adachi and a Seabury hitting error.

The Spartans led the third set 23-15 before Micah Miranda's serving sparked a 7-0 run by Lanakila Baptist to close it to 23-22. Snow then notched back-to-back kills to end it.

Seabury Hall jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth set and never looked back, with Snow and Alex Wright each notching four kills without an error.

James Tesseir led the Warriors with 17 kills and Chayse Antonio led the defense with 19 digs for Lanakila Baptist.

Castle def. Hawai'i Prep 25-22, 14-25, 25-22, 25-15

Charlie Hendrix had a match-high 16 kills and Kasson Carter and Maka Piedad each added 10 kills as the Knights held off Ka Makani at Maryknoll.

Hendrix had eight kills and only one hitting error in the first set, which Castle won after scoring the last three points on kills by Hendrix and Carter and an HPA hitting error.

Ka Makani ran away with the second set, finishing with an 11-4 run, but the Knights rebounded in Set 3 behind Carter's seven kills and a kill by Hendrix followed by a double block from Hendrix and Teawe Olds ended it after Hawaii Prep drew to 23-22.

Piedad had four kills and Olds added four blocks in the fourth set to help Castle close out the match.

Kam Kam-Aweau led the Knights defense with 22 digs and Piedad added 21 assists.

Rokas Cesnulevicius led Ka Makani with 13 kills, including four in the second set, and Kyle Katase added a match-high 35 digs.
