WAIPAHU - In dominating fashion, the Kapolei Hurricanes triumphed over the Waipahu Marauders in a matchup of two defending OIA champions. The Hurricanes (2011 OIA Red champions) outscored the Marauders (2011 OIA White champions) in shutout fashion, 6-0.

"I thought the boys did well," said Kapolei Assistant Coach Ryan Lau. "There are some things that could be cleaner but overall I'm happy with their performance."

The first goal was scored in the 5th minute of the first half. Kapolei's Richard "Kalei" Gallarde took advantage of a 50/50 ball near the 18 yard box. A hesitation by the Marauder keeper allowed the senior to take a shot that was drilled into the right corner of the goal.

The second goal came from an outstanding effort by Kapolei senior Caleb Gouveia. In the 29th minute, Gouveia took control of the ball near half field. Gouveia maneuvered and navigated his way through the defense and took his shot, making the game 2-0.

"Waipahu played hard," said Gouveia. "I give them props for sticking up to us."

"Kapolei played a good game," said Waipahu Head Coach Steven Santiago. "They pushed the ball well and made a lot of runs through us. They were faster and more physical which they used to their advantage."

Gouveia and Gallarde would make another highlight as they combined to score the third goal of the game. In the 35th minute, Gouveia was in position to shoot. But instead, he crossed the ball across the goal and Gallarde was there for the finish.

"It's not about being an individual," said Gouveia. "Got to play with team work."

The next two goals for the Hurricanes were made by shots from near the Marauders 18 yard box. The first came in the 39th minute off the leg of Kapolei senior Kamalu "Malu" Carmack. The second goal came during the 46th minute. Kapolei sophomore Keo Ponce shielded off a Waipahu defender as he turned and took a curving shot at the goal, making the game 5-0 early in the second half.

"Our team played hard," said Gouveia." We came in here like it was our house."

Gouveia made his dominance known in this game by scoring another goal in the second half. A through ball played in the 50th minute to Gouveia allowed him to take a shot inside the 18 yard box, scoring the final goal of the game.

"I was shocked," said Gouveia. "I didn't think I made that goal."

Gallarde and Gouveia led the way for the Hurricanes with two goals each.

This was Gouveia's first appearance as a Hurricane. As a transfer from Campbell High School, he had to sit out last year and spent his time on the sideline.

"Caleb has a lot of experience at the club level," Said Coach Lau. "(Gouveia) was very eager and hungry. He was anxious to make something happen."

For Kapolei, this victory moves them to 2-0-0 for the season.

"We're ready for everybody," said Gouveia. "We have more games coming up; I think we are ready for states."

For Waipahu, the loss to Kapolei does not affect them in league play. As a division two school, this game does not count toward their goal to become OIA White champions.

"Well it was a loss against division 1 team," said Coach Santiago. "We look at the past games as practice to get ready for our own league so every player on our team has played in every game so far."
