National powers highlight Iolani Classic field




Nationally-ranked Montrose Christian and De La Salle, as well as defending state champion Kamehameha highlight the Iolani Prep Classic boys' basketball tournament Dec. 16 to 21 at Iolani School.

Montrose Christian, out of Rockville, Md., is ranked fourth in the POWERADE Fab 50 preseason national rankings. De La Salle, out of Concord, Calif., is ranked 35th.

Other teams from abroad visiting the tournament are: Tsinghua (Bejing), Westbury (Houston), Lincoln (San Diego), Orlando (Calif.), Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.) and Fairfax (Los Angeles).

Other Hawaii teams in the classic are: host Iolani, Kaimuki, Kalani, Kamehameha-Hawaii, Kahuku, Farrington and Academy of the Pacific.

Here is the first-round schedule (Note: Kaimuki vs. Iolani has been moved from Friday to Saturday):

Dec. 16
Westbury vs. Kalani, 5 p.m.
Lincoln vs. Tsinghua, 6:30 p.m.
Orlando vs. Kamehameha, 8 p.m.

Dec. 17
Kaimuki vs. Iolani, 2:00 p.m.
Bishop O'Dowd vs. Kamehameha-Hawaii, 3:30 p.m.
Fairfax vs. Kahuku, 5 p.m.
De La Salle vs. Farrington, 6:30 p.m.
Montrose Christian vs. Academy of the Pacific, 8 p.m.

The tournament continues Dec. 19, 20 and concludes Dec 21.
