Beaver led Waipahu's defensive effort

At 5-feet-5 and 165 pounds, Waipahu's Beaver Lagima Jr. made a big impact on helping Waipahu beat Pearl City, 9-7, for the Oahu Interscholastic Association White football title Friday night at Aloha Stadium.

Lagima had two interceptions, one of which led to a field goal that essentially was the difference in the game.

He had one of a number of great performances by the Waipahu defense that contained a Pearl City offense that had averaged 26.7 points per game. Wesley Nagaseu and Joseph Kahele Ayau each had an interception for the Marauders, who also registered five sacks by five different players. So it was really a collaborative effort.

The Chargers' only big plays were on drag-and-rolls, where one receiver made a reception and handed the ball off to another receiver crossing past him. One was a 56-yard scoring play for Pearl City's only score.

The win gave Waipahu a bye in this weekend's opening round of the First Hawaiian Bank Division II state football tournament. The Marauders play the winner of Friday's Konawaena and Lahainaluna game at War Memorial Stadium.

This is Waipahu's third appearance in the Division II state tournament. Its farthest advancement was getting eliminated in the semifinals by Kauai in 2006.
