Defending champion Campbell top seed for DI tourney


Defending state champ Campbell is the top seed for the Data House Division I State Championships set for May 3 through May 6 at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The O'ahu Interscholastic Association champ Sabers are followed by Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Mid-Pacific, Maui Interscholastic League champ Lahainaluna and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Waiakea. All four draw opening-round byes.

The unseeded teams begin play Tuesday.

Kealakehe will play Kapolei at 1 p.m., Kailua will take on Leilehua at 3 p.m., Baldwin will meet Mililani at 5 p.m. and Punahou will battle Castle at 7 p.m.

Campbell will play the winner of Kealakehe-Kapolei at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Hurricanes, the OIA West champion, swept a two-game series from the Sabers during the regular season.

In other quarterfinals on Wednesday, Mid-Pacific will play the winner of Baldwin-Mililani at 5 p.m., the winner of Punaohu-Castle will take on Lahainaluna at 3 p.m. and the winner of Kailua-Leilehua will play Waiakea at 1 p.m.

The Division II bracket will be announced later. The final berth will be determined Saturday when Kauai plays Saint Francis at Kauai's Isenberg Field in a play-in game. Both are runners-up of their respective leagues.
