Roosevelt overcame a spectacular 35-point performance by Radford guard TJ Reid tonight to hold off the visiting Rams, 69-67, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball playoff action.

The Rough Riders improved to 12-3 in league play and will host Moanalua (9-7) at 6 p.m. Saturday for a chance to advance to the semifinals through the losers' bracket. Both of those teams secured state tournament berths tonight.

Radford, seeded No. 1 in the OIA Red Conference Western Division, fell to 12-3 and will host Kaimuki (10-6) at the same time for the league's fifth and final state tourney berth.

"That team (Radford) deserves to go to the state tournament -- they're one of the best teams I've seen all year," Roosevelt coach Steve Hathaway said.

Reid, a 5-foot-10 combo guard, alone might be worth the price of admission. He scored 24 points in the second half, including 14 in the final period.

The Rough Riders were up by eight, 67-59, after J.J. Mariano's two free throws with 50.4 seconds remaining, but Reid later hit a 3-pointer from 25 feet out to close it to 67-64 with 16 ticks left and then swished another one from beyond the arc with 1 second remaining after Mariano had effectively sealed the victory with two free throws 10 seconds earlier.

"That kid (Reid) could shoot the rock," Hathaway said. "I knew he could score, but not from the range he showed tonight. That's the best performance I've seen all season."

Roosevelt forward Kaipo Pale was nothing to sneeze at, either, finishing with 27 points and nine rebounds, including 15 points in the second half.

But the Rams stayed in the game via Reid and impressive free throw shooting, hitting 17 of 18 attempts (94 percent) overall including 11 of 12 in the second half.

Radford took a 17-16 lead on three free throws by Zachary Pelzl, who was fouled at halfcourt as time expired. The Rough Riders, however, finished the second period with an 11-3 run to lead 32-24 at the break.

The Rams closed it to 46-42 entering the fourth quarter and Reid's 3-pointer cut it to 47-45 a half-minute later. But Roosevelt -- which went 8 of 25 from the line in last Friday's 62-57 loss to Mililani -- sank 12 of 17 free throws (71 percent) to hold off the many comeback attempts.

"Guys stepped up and made their free throws tonight," Hathaway said.

Mariano finished with 13 points and Brendan Nakatani added 10 points for the Rough Riders.

"We needed to play better defense," Radford coach Wayne Keys said.
