'EWA BEACH - Campbell made 8 of 10 free throws in overtime to oust Kailua, 62-59, Tuesday night in an opening-round game of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red boys' basketball tournament at Campbell.

The Sabers will travel to Roosevelt Wednesday in a 6 p.m. championship bracket game.

The Surfriders tried to prolong their season after Chevy Mikaele hit two free throws with 18 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 54. Allan Otanes' 3-point try from the top of the key missed at the buzzer, but the Sabers were able to hold off the Surfriders in the four-minute overtime period.

In other opening-round games, Kalani stunned Leilehua, 54-47, in overtime at the Mules' gym; host Moanalua knocked off Pearl City, 70-33; and Kaimuki beat visiting Wai'anae, 53-34.

In other quarterfinals at 6 tonight, Kaimuki will travel to Mililani, Kalani will visit Kahuku and Moanalua will play at Radford.

"No matter how the win came, I'll take it," Campbell coach Wyatt Tau said. "I really didn't want to become one and done."

The Sabers and Surfriders were evenly matched during regulation. Kailua outscored Campbell, 18-9, in the second quarter to overcome a 12-9 first-quarter deficit to take a 27-25 lead into the half. The Surfriders maintained their margin at 38-36 after three quarters.

But the Sabers pressed the Surfriders into turnovers that led to points that eventually gave Campbell the lead, 43-42, at 4:45 left after Fouina Haskins completed a three-point play.

The Sabers later opened their lead to 52-45 with 1:21 left, only to see the Surfriders chip away, pulling to 54-52. But Kailua's Awa Poggi's steal eventually getting Mikaele to the free throw line, where he tied the game at 54 with 18 seconds left.

The Sabers opened overtime with a 5-0 lead from making 5 of 6 free throws. But Luis Valenzuela's 3-pointer with 59 seconds pulled Kailua to 59-57. A player-control foul on Haskins with 42 seconds turned the ball over to Kailua, which tied the game at 59 when BJ Halmos fouled Kila Zuttermeister, who tied the game with his two free throws with 28 seconds left.

But the Sabers reclaimed the lead with 21.8 seconds, when Otanes, who was fouled by Poggi, made both his free throws.

The Surfriders moved up court with Zuttermeister driving to the hoop, but Christopher Crawford blocked his shot with 6.3 seconds. Haskins was fouled on the play and made one of two free throws to expand Campbell's lead. Rhys Nakakura's 3-pointer from about 21 feet missed as time expired.

Haskins had a game-high 24 points plus six rebounds, while Crawford had 23 with eight boards. Their rebounding helped against the taller Surfriders.

"Surprisingly, they beat us inside," Kailua coach Tim Harrison said. "My guys are bigger. They came right at our inside. We had a hard time with it."

"It wasn't the block I was telling them (to do)," Tau said. "I was telling our guys to box out. That's one thing we were lacking all season because we're fast, so skinny, so small, we gotta jump for every ball. It paid off. We got that block. I'm happy for that one and I'll take it."

Zuttermeister led Kailua with 13 points, followed by Valenzuela's 12 and Ethan Mahaulu's 11.

Otanes had 10 assists, including one from behind his back, and four steals for the Sabers.
