Pearl City boys, girls sweep Western Division titles

Pearl City's boys' quality proved itself Saturday in capturing the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division team championship at Radford's Jim Alegre Gymnasium.

The Chargers rolled up 231 points to runner-up Campbell's 198.

Last week, Campbell won the dual meeting title in part to Pearl City forfeiting matches in which it had no competitors in some weight classes. But Saturday, despite not having anyone in 152 and 189, Pearl City had enough quality to out-distance the Sabers, who competed in all 14 weight divisions.

"This week, we happened to be a little bit better," Chargers' coach Mike Lee said.

Pearl City also won the girls' title, scoring 162 to runner-up 'Aiea's 122.

Even the JV girls won, tallying 155 points to runner-up Campbell's 55.

"They all worked together, they all trained together," Lee said. "It's a total team victory because the boys and girls wrestle each other, the JV wrestles the varsity."

Leilehua won the boys' JV to prevent the meet from being a clean sweep for the Chargers.

Pearl City's boys got individual titles from Gabriel Iereneo-Baring (120 pounds), Blake Cooper (140), Dustin-Donovan Bataya (145), Raynald Cooper III (171), Evan Greenleaf (215) and Devin Ching (285).

It was the fourth time this season that Greenleaf beat Campbell's Sheldon Maae in the 215 weight class, but this one was the closest. Twice he had pinned Maae and this was the third time he won by decision.

"Every time we wrestle, he becomes more familiar with me," said Greenleaf, who is hearing impaired and spoke through an signer.

Winning individual titles for Pearl City's girls were: Joey Nanhta (103), Kaimiloa Evans (120), Charmagne Monis (140) and Sanoe Spencer (220).

In the Eastern Division, Kahuku swept the boys and girls' varsity. Results of that meet will run separately.
