Brayden Shager passed for 427 yards and three touchdowns but Hawaii couldn't keep up with San Diego State in a 41-34 loss at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex Saturday night.

The Rainbow Warriors (2-6) allowed 21 fourth-quarter points by the Aztecs (3-4), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

San Diego State held a 17-0 lead following a 70-yard pick-6 by Deshawn McCuin with 12:25 left in the second quarter. Hawaii chipped away with a pair of touchdown passes by Shager in the second period.

His 17-yard scoring strike to Pofele Ashlock got Hawaii on the board with 7:49 to play in the first half. Shager connected with Alex Perry for an 8-yard TD pass with 1:30 on the clock to get his team within 17-14 at the intermission.

Matthew Shipley's 46-yard field goal evened the score at 17 with 8:34 left in the third quarter, but Jack Browning put San Diego State back ahead with his 24-yard field goal. Shager answered with a 52-yard TD pass to Nick Cenacle just 56 seconds later on the final play of the third quarter.

The Rainbow Warriors held a 24-20 lead after three quarters, but saw the Aztecs separate with two scores in a 66-second span early in the final period. Jaylen Mayden hit Marcus Shaw for a 69-yard TD pass at the 13:33 mark. Two plays after a Hawaii fumble, Lucky Sutton scampered into the end zone from two yards out. Browning tacked on the extra point to make it a 34-24 lead for the visitors.

Hawaii made it a one-score game with Landon Sims' 1-yard TD run with 10:22 to play, but San Diego State got an insurance score with Jaylon Armstead's 1-yard TD plunge at the 2:11 mark.

Shipley knocked through a 47-yard field goal with about a minute to play, but the Aztecs recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.

The Rainbow Warriors finished with 480 yards of total offense. Shager completed 29 of 47 pass attempts and was intercepted once. Steven McBride hauled in five catches for 157 yards, Cenacle tallied three grabs for 100 yards and Ashlock pulled down eight receptions for 68 yards.

Mayden threw for 221 yards on 18-of-24 passing with one interception. Shaw finished with six catches for 126 yards.

The Aztecs recorded 378 total yards.

Hawaii will play at New Mexico next Saturday before it returns home to host San Jose State on Oct. 28.
