SALT LAKE - Another week, another win for the Big Red Machine.

No. 1-ranked Kahuku got two rushing scores by Aofaga Wily and another impressive outing from its defense in a 27-6 win over Moanalua Friday. The Red Raiders kept their unbeaten season alive to improve to 6-0 and 4-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East Conference. Na Menehune fell to 3-3 and 2-2 before a home crowd of about 1,200.

Kahuku took a two-touchdown lead on a pair of 5-yard runs in the first half and got a boost from its special teams in the second while holding Moanalua to a pair of field goals. It was the first time in three games that the Red Raider defense allowed any points. Kahuku shut out Kaiser (39-0) and Roosevelt (38-0) in its two previous outings. Friday night, the visitors allowed Na Menehune to gain just 203 yards (142 rushing, 61 passing) and forced two turnovers.

"We want to have a shut out every game and we're trying to stay undefeated," said Kahuku safety Tigi Hill, who blocked a Moanalua punt which led to a Kahuku touchdown in the third quarter. "We knew that it was Moanalua's homecoming, so we knew that they would come out with a bang, so we just worked hard everyday this week."

The Red Raiders scored first - just before the end of the first quarter - on a 5-yard run by Wily. The play capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive and Josh Sorensen added the extra point to give Kahuku a 7-0 lead.

After Moanalua went three-and-out on its ensuing possession, but Kahuku's Punga Vea returned the Richard Villasenor punt 50 yards down to the Moanalua 20-yard line and Tyrone Brown scored on a 5-yard run three plays later. On the scoring play, quarterback Evan Moe ran a triple option to the left and pitched it to Brown, who beat the defensive back around the corner.

Moanalua got on the board with a 25-yard field goal by Lee Arakawa with minutes left in the first half, but the Red Raiders answered with their own score before the intermission. Kahuku picked up 48 yards on a deep pass from Moe to Vea to move it down to Na Menehune 12-yard line. Wily carried around left end for an 8-yard gain and on the very next play, he found the end zone on a 4-yard run for his second score of the night. Sorensen's PAT was good and the visitors took a 21-3 lead at halftime.

Midway through the third quarter, Hill and the Red Raiders' special teams got into the scoring action. On fourth-and-nine, Villasenor received the long snap and rolled out to his right before attempting a punt, but Hill extended his body to block it near the Moanalua 20 and after a scramble for the loose ball, Kahuku's Benetton Fonua came away with it in the end zone.

"We noticed that he likes to roll out to his right and kick it," said Hill, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound senior. "Coach told us to push on the right side and I got close to him (earlier in the game), but never got to him, so I tried a little bit harder and I got it."

Kahuku's fast-paced offense in the second half seemingly wore down the smaller Moanalua defense. The Red Raiders pounded out 11 first down by rush and held Na Menehune to 5 of 13 on third-down conversions.

"They're a great team with a lot of depth, a lot of size and they're very physical, but we didn't do ourselves any favors with the special teams miscue and a few other mistakes we made," Moanalua coach Arnold Martinez said. "I'm not upset at all though, I'm very happy with our guys, I thought we hung in there and played tough."

Moanalua's Charles Spencer led all rushers with 135 yards on 24 carries.

"Moanalua did a good job, we had a hard time stopping some of their running plays, so we have to go back and fix those things," Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said.
