FINAL  1   2   3   4   5
PUN (16-0) 25 25 25 - - 3
HBA (4-10) 12 23 19 - - 0

Punahou broke out the brooms to sweep Hawaii Baptist Academy at HBA's Dan Liu Gymnasium on Tuesday. The scores were 25-12, 25-23, and 25-19.

Riley Haine led the way for Punahou with 13 kills and had an ace and assist. Keau Thompson was next with nine kills and four total blocks. Keegan Au Yuen dished out 23 assists.

Hawaii Baptist Academy was led by Matthew Mokan's six kills. Skyar Takeuchi did himself some good with a team-high eight assists. Jackson Lincoln had five assists of his own and logged the Eagles' only ace of the game.

The Eagles soared out of the gate fast and took the early lead in set one. However, Punahou did not take long to establish a rhythm. When it was tied at eight, Punahou hit its stride and went on a 14-3 run to ultimately pull a gap and make it 22-11. Punahou took three of the last four points to take the first set 25-12.

Both teams started out the second set with a lot of service errors. Hawaii Baptist Academy hit the reset button shortly thereafter and led by as many as eight points in the closing stages. It was 20-12 when the Eagles appeared to have the set in hand; the Buffanblu was not so sure.

Punahou went on an 8-0 run to tie the score until Jackson Lincoln assisted a kill from Mokan to put the Eagles back in front. Punahou did not let up and continued to turn up the juice. They had outscored Hawaii Baptist 13-3 in the last leg of the set to rob the Eagles of winning set two.

"We kind of let go a little bit," Thompson said. "We just need to come back and take everything one point at a time."

Both teams were evenly matched in set three. Once again, Punahou got in a rhythm the earliest midway through the third set. Although the Eagles kept the Buffanblu in sight, it was not until the closing stages when it was 20-16 that the Buffanblu used a 5-3 run to win the third set. A net violation by the Eagles gave Buffanblu the clean sweep.

"Coach told us ‘stay on them, don't let them roll over us,'" Thompson added.

"We were handing them easy points on our errors without them having to work for it," Punahou coach Rick Tune said.

Punahou improves to 1-0 in the ILH while Hawaii Baptist Academy drops to 0-1. Punahou next takes on Maryknoll at home on Thursday, Mar. 10 at 6 p.m. HST. Hawaii Baptist Academy will next host Mid-Pacific on Thursday, Mar. 10 at 6 p.m. HST.
