KAPALAMA HEIGHTS—Kahiau Bruhn scored a game-high 23 points and put on the finishing touches to help No. 3 Kamehameha-Kapalama hold off No. 2 Maryknoll, 50-47, at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium Tuesday.

The Spartans (4-2) turned to their full court press to score off Warrior (4-2) turnovers and whittled a 13-point fourth quarter deficit down to one after Logan Dias hit a 3-pointer from the left wing. Dias, who is averaging 14.2 points per game, finished with a team-high 16 points on 7-of-17 shooting and five rebounds.

"We've barely practiced it and we practiced it one time and we did it the last two games to put full court pressure on the inbounds and try to trap on the first play and get the other team to run faster than they're used to running. We got some steals off that and they missed some free throws that gave us opportunities," Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant said of the press and the scoring run.

Maryknoll got the ball back after Parker Grant (six points) drew a charge on Bruhn on the inbounds to give the Spartans the ball back with over 15 seconds left in the quarter.

The Spartans came up empty-handed after Dias drove and turned it over on a drive and Bruhn scooped it up and was fouled immediately. He hit two free throws with 8.5 seconds left to finish 6 for 6 from the free throw line. Bruhn was 8 for 11 from the field and finished with eight boards and three assists.

"It was the mental fortitude. We didn't give up the lead. Learning with our group, it was handling the situation making sure we kept battling, whether it's a defensive rebound or a deflection or stop and keep focus on the next possession," Kamehameha coach Larry Park said.

Micah Sakamoto's 3-point attempt from the right wing was short and Bruhn swatted it away to knock the remaining seconds off the clock to seal the win.

"We wanted to Parker (Grant) to penetrate and sit our shooters on the 3-point line and we had two guys standing next to each other and that wasn't good spacing," Grant said of the final play.

"The togetherness they have, they don't give up on each other or point fingers at each other. They're always together trying to battle through it," Park said.

Maryknoll came out in a 3-2 zone against Kamehameha and the Warriors patiently moved it around on offense and Payton Kahahawai-Welch hit a 3 from the left wing to make it, 11-4. Hunter Marumoto hit his first 3 from the right corner, but Bruhn answered with a 3-pointer from the right corner before the buzzer to take a 14-7 lead going into the second quarter.

"It was something I used when I was at Kaimuki," Grant said of the zone. "We had to get out of it and after EJ and Kahiau were killing us with shots."

"They play well together. Whether it's a man or a zone, they find open spots and make shots. Kahiau and EJ hit shots, Payton hit it from the wing. They're unselfish and share the ball and find the open space and guy," Park said of attacking the zone.

The Spartans got within five after a turn around jump shot from Grant, but the Warriors extended the lead to nine as EJ Kapihe scored six points in the quarter off jumpers and Kamehameha led, 24-15 going into halftime.

Zion Bruce was fouled and made the first free throw and Kapihe was whistled for a technical foul on his way to the bench. Bruce made the second free throw and Sakamoto hit both technical free throws to complete a four-point swing and trailed, 28-23.

Kamehameha answered with a six-point swing of their own. Bruhn converted a three-point play and Kalai Smith nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing to force a timeout from Maryknoll and led, 34-23.

Kapihe converted a layup off a full court pass from Bruhn to beat the buzzer to give the Warriors a commanding, 38-25 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Warriors went up by as much as 13 following Chasten Ponteras' shot and held a 10 point lead until Maryknoll's Jaren Kaneshiro completed a 3-point play.

Kapihe finished with 12 points and three blocks before fouling out at the 2:10 mark, but Marumoto split the free throws and Zion Milare's shot by the block got Maryknoll within six.

The Warriors came up empty handed from the free throw line shooting 1 for 5 that allowed the Spartans to get within four. Bruhn received the inbounds pass and stepped on the baseline to set up Dias' 3 that got Maryknoll within one.

Kamehameha as a team shot 9 for 14 (64.3 percent) from the free throw line while Maryknoll finished 10 for 14 (71.4 percent).

Kamehameha opens up Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I second round play with a home game against Mid-Pacific (1-4) on Jan. 28 while Maryknoll hosts Damien (0-5) on Jan. 27.

Both teams will face each other again in the regular season finale at Clarence T. C. Ching Gymnasium on Feb. 12.
