Pono Sales and Kahiau Young each scored on an interception return and Peyton Damacio ran in a pair of short touchdowns to help Damien hold off Kamehameha II by a score of 25-20 at Aloha Stadium Friday night.

The Monarchs overcame three turnovers of their own to even their record at 1-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I-II standings. They were coming off of a 28-0 loss at Iolani to open the season last week, but picked up interim coach Anthony "Bones" Tuitele's first win over the Warriors, who were making their debut this fall.

Sales gave his team its first lead with 5:07 left in the second quarter with his 65-yard pick-six, while Young's 47-yard interception return for touchdown stretched Damien's lead to 25-14 with 1:13 remaining in the third quarter.

Dalmacio got the Monarchs on the board with a 3-yard TD run late in the opening stanza. He punched in another score from a yard out early in the third quarter, which put his team ahead, 19-14.

Damien overcame a prolific night from Kamehameha wide receiver Ty Perkins, who recorded four receptions for 152 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. Perkins was left wide open on a trick play that resulted in a 54-yard TD pass from reserve quarterback/wide receiver Noah Spencer just 45 seconds into the contest.

After Sales put the Monarchs ahead with his defensive score, Perkins answered for the Warriors with a 43-yard scoring strike from Nazaiah Caravallo. The ensuing extra point by Kane Tubania put Kamehameha ahead, 14-13, at the 3:52 mark of the second quarter.

The Warriors were held scoreless in the third quarter, but Caravallo and Perkins hooked up again less than a minute into the fourth, this time for a 33-yard touchdown connection.

Kamehameha had two possessions in the final 11 minutes, but turned it over both times. Caravallo was stripped on a fourth-down scramble and linebacker Kahiau Young received the fumble for the Monarchs.

The Warriors' final drive started at the Damien 46-yard line with 5:33 to play. They converted a pair of fourth downs on the 12-play drive and drove to the Monarchs' 34-yard line. However, on fourth-and-20, Spencer had his pass intercepted by Brayden Taum just outside of the end zone and Damien was able to run out the final 4:03 on the clock to close it out.

Young finished with a team-high eight tackles and registered one of his team's six sacks on Kamehameha quarterbacks. Braden Faurot (five tackles) and Jayce Pedro (2 1/2 tackles, three quarterback hurries) tallied two sacks apiece in the win.

Quarterback Jensen Tanele rushed for a game-high 75 yards on 15 carries and completed eight of his 26 pass attempts for 128 yards without an interception.

Dalmacio finished with 19 carries for 29 yards and Syles Alaimalo contributed all-around with five receptions for 92 yards, three carries for 24 yards, six total tackles — including two for losses — and three kickoff returns for 92 yards.

Damien were 7 of 16 of third-down conversions and finished with 249 yards of total offense, while Kamehameha was just 2 of 13 on third downs and posted 214 offensive yards.

Both teams will be back in action next weekend. The Warriors will play Iolani Friday in the first game of a doubleheader at Aloha Stadium; the nightcap will be an Open Division game featuring No. 5 Kamehameha (0-1) taking on top-ranked Saint Louis (0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Damien will play PAC-5 (0-1) Saturday, 10 a.m. at Saint Louis School.
