LAHAINA, Maui — The opening week of the 2019 prep football season wasn't going to end without some drama.
No. 14 Damien rallied from a 31-7 second-half deficit to stun No. 13 Lahainaluna in overtime, 38-31, Saturday night in a non-league game at Sue D. Cooley Stadium.
Quarterback Jake Holtz was at the forefront of the Monarchs' comeback, having a hand in four scores after halftime to lead Damien (1-0) in its thrilling victory. His 7-yard TD pass to Aperamo Sulu was the game-winning score in the extra period.
Christian "Dippy" Souza also earned his credit for booting 38-yard field goal as time expired in regulation to send the game into overtime and Kellen Robins-Beers got an interception in the extra period to seal the victory for the Monarchs.
Joshua Tihada scored on a pair of runs to lead the Lunas (0-1) in the loss.
