Kill: H. Tautuaa (WNAE) 10 kills

PEARL CITY — Heipua Tautuaa put down 10 kills and had one of her team's five service aces as Waianae made quick work of host Pearl City in straight sets 25-9 and 25-6 Thursday night.

The Seariders improved to 2-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association's Western Division, while the Chargers fell to 0-2.

Tautuaa, a 5-foot-11 junior outside hitter, was the only player to record double-digit kills.

Waianae coach Thia Palakiko credited middle blockers Kiani Hensley, LyRissa Dicion and Kalei Irvine for opening things up for Tautuaa at the pins.

"The thing is our middles are the reason why that happens because they go in and they hold the block so our outsides have one-on-one (looks) most of the time, so that helps us out a lot when we establish our middle," said Palakiko, who is in her first season back at the helm of her alma mater since 1997.

The Seariders made a living at the service line, where four different players recorded at least one ace. They committed just three service errors for the match.

"That really made a difference, because at practice we practice tough serves. We have an A and B serve — one soft serve and one hard serve — and we just have to be smart where to use it," Tautuaa said.

Conversely, the Chargers struggled in the service game, finishing with six errors to zero aces. They also committed 13 hitting errors to Waianae's six.

"Serving is the thing, serving is a priority because if we serve it out or into the net, we're giving up free points and we don't like to give free points," Palakiko said.

It was at the service line where the Seariders separated in the opening set. After Pearl City pulled even at 5-all, Tautuaa served up a string of 12 consecutive points — including a couple of kills from the back row and an ace — to give her team a 17-5 lead that it did not relinquish.

The Chargers called a timeout trailing 20-9, but Cherish Borge's ace was following by a Shaniah Kepoo-Caspino kill from the right side off a backset from Christen Guzman and a Pearl City hitting error. Tautuaa then made a heads-up play with her two-handed push one the first contact to find an open spot in the defense on the back left corner to set-up set point.

A double-contact violation against Pearl City capped a 5-0 Waianae run to end game 1.

Gabrielle Canienero opened game two with a 6-0 run at the service line. The Seariders stretched their lead to 10-1 on Tautuaa's cross-cross kill off an assist from Canienero.

Pearl City picked up back-to-back points on Waianae errors, but the visitors answered with a 6-0 run that included a pair of aces by libero Chevelle Wagner-Chun and culminated with Tautuaa's cut shot to give her team a 16-3 advantage.

The Seariders then used a 9-2 run — including a Guzman-to-Borge connection on match point — to close out the tidy 38-minute contest.

Palakiko was pleased to see her players did not take the Chargers lightly.

"Their goal is to come in and play their game; It doesn't matter who we play, whether they're good or they're not so good," Palakiko said. "We heard Pearl City had tough middles, had tough outsides, so we just played our game and that's all we expect them to do from beginning to end, no matter who's on the court."

Tautuaa said the team has taken their coach's words to heart.

"Our coaches taught us to be humble at practice. It's good to be humble, to be respectful to other teams. We're not that type of team that even if we're up by a lot, we laugh at them or tease them," Tautuaa said.

Both teams continue league play next week. Waianae will host Waipahu Tuesday before traveling to Nanakuli Thursday. Pearl City will visit Campbell Tuesday, then play host to Leilehua Thursday.
