A trio of Raiders scored in double figures as Iolani avenged an earlier loss to top Mid-Pacific, 49-31 to open the second round of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I round-robin at Iolani's Lower Gymnasium.

The Owls won, 49-40 in the league opener on Jan. 4. but the No. 8 Raiders returned the favor to snap a two-game skid after going 1-4 in their first five games.

"What we were looking for out of all of our games is that we're coming out and being competitors. Coming out and having a more aggressive mentality. It was good to see it today and we were down a bit and still have it. I'm happy with that performance and we're trying to get better," said Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto.

Noah Bumanglag and Frank Felix scored 13 apiece and Kawika Lee added 12 for Iolani, who improved to 2-4 in the ILH standings.

"It's a great way to start the second round," said Bumanglag, who had four steals and converted two into transition layups.

Kamana Lapina scored a team-high 10 points for the Owls who dropped to 2-4 in the ILH.

Lapina and Danton Nitta each drained 3-pointers and Hugh Donlon sank mid-range jumpers to give the Owls an 11-6 advantage. Felix made a 3-pointer and Lee added a shot in the paint for Iolani's only field goals of the first quarter.

"I thought we had some good opportunities, but we didn't make any of them," said Shimamoto.

Mid-Pacific couldn't carry over the first quarter momentum and went cold after shooting 0 of 11 from the field and the Owls got their only quarter points off of Bobby Thompson's free throw.

"We changed defenses and it gave them some problems and it gave us energy," said Shimamoto.

The Raiders took the lead for the first time after Cole Hogland split a pair of free throws and Kawika Lee nailed a jumper near the free throw line for a 17-12 lead at halftime. Iolani managed to outscore the Owls, 11 to 1 in the second quarter.

"We told our guys to settle down more. The opportunities were going to be there whether they're passes or finishes. We had to be stronger and be in better control and focusing on finishing it," said Shimamoto.

"It starts on defense for us. When we speed them up and push the ball, we were able to drive," said Bumanglag.

Lapina opened the third quarter with a 5-0 run for the Owls to tie the game at 17. However, the Raiders responded with a 7-0 run of their own and broke open the flood gates. Iolani took control of the second half and led by as much as 18 and outscored Mid-Pacific 32 to 19.

The Owls shot 32 percent (12 of 37) from the field and shot 50 percent from the free throw line (2 of 4). The Raiders shot 43.2 percent from the field (16 of 37) and 72.2 percent (13 of 18) from the free throw line.

"They weren't really hitting their shots. We could get rebounds and push and hold it if we need to," said Bumanglag.

Mid-Pacific goes to Hemmeter Fieldhouse to take on top-ranked Punahou (5-1 ILH), who lost to Maryknoll, on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Iolani travels to Kekuhaupio Gymnasium to face No. 2 Kamehameha (4-2 ILH) on the same night.
