PEARL CITY — Top-ranked Pearl City got a strong all around effort to knock off Campbell, 3-1, Monday night at Bino Neves Stadium.

The Chargers improved to 4-0 to remain tied with Kapolei (4-0) for the first in handing the Sabers (3-1) their first loss of the season in Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division girls soccer season.

It was the second game in a row the Chargers handed a previously unbeaten team its first loss. The Chargers beat Mililani last Friday, 3-2.

"We're in a good place because we got two of the top ones knocked off," Pearl City coach Frank Baumholtz said. "Now we have to focus so we don't lose any of our intensity because that has a tendency to get to you, especially when you talk about how good you could be in the paper and online - I'm not totally in favor of all that stuff - but we have great potential and great young ones."

Baumholtz probably won't have to worry about letdowns, considering how junior Sunshine Fontes feels about the Chargers' opponents.

"They're all going to be rough games for us," Fontes said. "We just have to be ready for any opponent we play."

Pearl City scored on first-half goals by Daelenn Tokunaga and Brittny Ihara to take a 2-0 lead into the half. Hunter Malaki made it 3-0 before the Sabers finally got on the board on a goal by Jourdyn Curran.

"The girls just have to get confident," Campbell coach James Curran said. "This is our first big test of the season. (ScoringLive) ranked them No. 1 for a reason, so it was a good first test for us and we'll grow from there."

Pearl City was simply the quicker team on the field. It was evident with effective passing and ability to break up Campbell's passes, diminishing the Sabers' ability to mount any kind of sustained attack.

"They're a fast team," coach Curran said "This is a fast field (Pearl City plays on an artificial surface, while Campbell plays on a grass field). We train on a very different field. Speed of play is a whole lot faster."

Pearl City jumped on the Sabers early. The speedy Tokunaga got in a one-on-one situation from the left side and scored from 10-yards in the 16th minute.

About 12 minutes later, Caylie Uyema, who had three goals against Mililani last week, shot a nice cross to Ihara, who drilled her goal from 10 yards to make it 2-0.

"It was to come out strong," Fontes said of the key to the win. "Once you get one (goal), get two."

The Chargers pulled away about 10 minutes into the second half when Malaki hammered a shot from 25 yards to make it 3-0.

The Sabers avoided the shutout in the 59th minute when Jourdyn Curran scored from 10 yards after a pass from Cheyenne Smith to make it 3-1.

Later in the half, the Chargers' Soraya Santos placed corner kick in front of the goal, but keeper Ruby Ramos made a nice leaping save.

"Everybody pretty much did their job," Baumholtz said of his players. "We were in the passing lanes, had a good sense of where to be. I would've like the defense to clear the ball a little bit more, instead of touch, touch and then clear because that second touch always gets you in trouble, but overall it was a very good game. Fun to watch. My heartbeat was about 111 at the start of the game then it dropped down to 80 by the end of the game."

At least for now, the Chargers will have tiebreaker advantages against Mililani and Campbell. But they still have to deal with No. 10 Kapolei (4-0) and Aiea (3-1). Those games are back-to-back in January.

Campbell can help its own cause down the road, as it still has games against Kapolei (this Friday), Aiea and Mililani.
