FINAL  1   2   3   4   5
WNAE (10-5) 22 19 19 - - 0
KAP (14-3) 25 25 25 - - 3

Similar to the last meeting exactly two weeks ago, No. 9 Kapolei topped its Westside rival Waianae in straight sets 25-22, 25-19, 25-19 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I semifinals at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium on Monday.

The Hurricanes (12-0), the best of the West, set up a match of unbeaten teams for the Division I title as it faces Moanalua (13-0), the best of the East, on Wednesday at McKinley following the Division II title match.

"This is a special group," Kapolei coach Naidah Gamurot said on her team's ride to the OIA final.

The Seariders (10-3) fall to Kapolei for the second time this season and takes on Mililani (10-2) for third place. Both teams already clinch spots in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Volleyball State Championships starting next week Monday.

Olivia Transfiguracion led the Hurricanes with two aces, a block and 28 assists.

"Today she had a tough time and our passing broke down and it was unusual for us. She had to be creative," said Gamurot, on Transfiguracion.

Four Kapolei players Michelyn Pililaau, Amryi Paris, Alexis Mareko, and Anela Pakaki-Pias each recorded seven kills and Tiffany Mook led her team with 10 digs.

Kapolei and Waianae battled through six ties throughout the match until the Hurricanes took control with a 24-21 lead following Tihani Guzman's kill to force a Waianae timeout. Alexis Mareko placed a kill off of Transfiguracion's pass to claim the first set, 25-22.

"Even though we pulled ahead, we couldn't take it for granted. We know they (Waianae) can turn it on. They did it to us before. We had to keep the pressure on. Whenever we took a dip, they turned the pressure on. We managed to outlast them," said Gamurot.

"A tight battle, it doesn't matter how you start, it's how you finish. That's where we struggled at finishing the game," said Waianae coach Wilhelm Wagner.

Both teams traded blows early on in the second set, but Kapolei reclaimed the lead and pushed it to five twice past the midway point and led by as much as eight and weren't threatened the rest of the way.

"They all know each other and how each other plays so there is some familiarity," said Gamurot.

"Usually it's the slow starts that catch us. In the past we were able to build off the slow starts and get back on board and take the lead. Now it's finishing games," said Wagner.

Heipua Tautuaa had eight kills and six digs, Jasmine Fonoti added seven kills, Chevelle Wagner-Chun had 11 digs, and Jorene Ulu passed out 22 assists for the Seariders.

Transfiguracion's block tied the set at 8, then Transfiguracion followed up with an ace and Kapolei got back-to-back kills from Anela Pakaki-Pias and Michelyn Pililaau to pull away. Waianae wouldn't go down as Jasmine Fonoti and Hokulani Irvine-Pule combined for a block to cut it down to two, 17-15. Kapolei stole the momentum and managed to score majority of their points off of Waianae miscues for the sweep.
