Kapolei boys, Sacred Hearts girls win inaugural free throw championship

The Kapolei boys and Sacred Hearts girls took top honors in the inaugural ScoringLive Free Throw Championship Friday night during the Great Aloha Run Health & Fitness Expo at the Neal Balisdell Exhibition Hall.

The Hurricanes' duo of Zoar Nedd and Isaiah Higa and the Lancers' pair of Dallas Martinez and Tehiwa Medeiros each defeated four opposing teams in a tournament bracket format to win $500 for their respective athletic programs.

Twelve boys teams and 15 girls teams participated in the inaugural event and were seeded in order of how well they shot free throws during the regular season and league play.

The top-seeded teams in each respective bracket, the Kamehameha girls and Damien boys basketball team, also earned a taco party for their free throw shooting prowess during the year from Taco Bell Hawaii.

Kapolei defeated Maryknoll in the boys bracket final while Sacred Hearts edged the Mililani girls team in a sudden-death shootout that needed six rounds to determine a winner.

The Kapolei boys and Sacred Heart girls faced off against one another for bragging rights. Nedd and Higa each made nine of 10 shots in the final round to win the whole event.

Special thanks to Carole Kai and the Great Aloha Run, Baden, IPR Hawaii and Taco Bell Hawaii for their support.
