Martinez wins at Mililani Invitational


Defending state champion Margarito Martinez of Leilehua won his second straight race of the season on Saturday, helping his boys cross country team to the team title at the Mililani Invitational.

Martinez finished the 3-mile course in 15 minutes, 48.21 seconds. Younger brother, Dylan, was second in 16:58.63 and teammate Elliot Estrada was third in 17:01.81, helping the Mules win with a meet-low 23 points. Also scoring points for Leilehua were Branden Miya (sixth, 17:47.61) and Adam Weaver (11th, 18:22.87).

Margarito won the season-opening meet at Pearl City on Sept. 4 while Dylan was second.

In the girls 3-mile race, Mililani's Kimberly Pugliese won her second straight race of the season, helping the Trojans win the team title.

Pugliese finished the three-mile course around her school's campus in 19:38.62. Pugliese also won the season-opening meet at Pearl City on Sept. 4.

Pugliese's teammates finished third, fourth, fifth and sixth to help the Trojans win the team title with 19 points. Courtney Garner was third (20:35.12), Taylor Suwa finished fourth (21:37.91), Jaclyn Knaus was fifth (21:49.80) and Taylor Sinn finished sixth (21:50.47). Moanalua's Sophie Curatilo finished second in 20:33.74.

Also on Saturday, Kalani runners won their respective races at the Kalani Invitational. Linnea Tokushige won the girls three-mile race in 21:39.76. Tokushige and Castle's Daylnn Chun Fat-Arden were the race leaders until Tokushige pulled away. Tamako Delfino of Roosevelt was second in 22:15.15 and Chun Fat-Arden was third in 22:19.03.

In the boys race, Gavin Taketa of Kalani passed race leader Marjeson Gonzales of Farrington with about a mile left to win in 17:53.48. Gonzales was second in 18:04.32 and Jerry Yu of Roosevelt was third in 18:29.70.
