AIEA—Tai-John Mizutani threw for 253 yards and three scores and KJ Pascua added a pair of rushing touchdowns to help Iolani roll by Radford, 42-6 at Aiea High School on Saturday night.
The game was originally pegged to be the 53rd Annual Father Bray Memorial Football Classic, but Aloha Stadium was not ready in time. This game was schedule to be played at Radford's John Velasco Stadium, but the field was not ready and there were issues with the lights so the game was moved to Aiea.
Jonah Soakai went basically untouched on a 85-yard kick off return 13 seconds into the game. However, this was Radford's only score all game.
"This year we're going to find out how our guys will bounce back from adversity," said Mizutani.
Iolani responded by scoring 42-unanswered points to put the Rams away for good. Mizutani targeted Justin Genovia, who had seven catches for 137 yards to lead all receivers. Jonah Miyazawa added six catches for 98 yards.
"We scored on four drives in a row by picking up the tempo. Their d-line was tired and credit to the o-line for blocking up front. We were taking what the defense gave us. Geno is a solid player," said Mizutani.
Mizutani threw a 25-yard touchdown to Drake Shigemura and another to Rayden Kaneshiro for 13 yards.
Raiders were effective on the ground as KJ Pascua rushed for 70 yards and scored two touchdowns. Troy Hanaoka gained 65 yards on the ground in relief.
Jarin Yokogawa came in midway through the second quarter at quarterback. Yokogawa's 16-yard touchdown pass to Kaneshiro with no time remaining gave the Raiders a 42-6 lead going into halftime. Due to the 35-point mercy rule the game went to running clock in the second half.
Helam Baldomero led the Raiders defense with eight tackles and an interception. Clinton Stevens of Radford had a pair of interceptions and JK Tumuo had a fumble recovery.
Radford won the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II and state title in 2015 and will travel to the Windward side to start OIA Division I play against Castle on Aug. 12. Iolani won't play their next game until Aug. 20 where they host Waimea.
