Male Athlete of the Week: Matthew Dunaway, Maryknoll baseballMatthew Dunaway's hard work and diligence finally paid off in a win Friday.
The junior right-handed pitcher turned in a gem for Maryknoll in its 3-0 shutout of then-No. 3 Kamehameha. Dunaway tossed a complete game two-hitter with five strikeouts against three walks to give the Spartans just their second win of the season.
It was the first victory of the year for Dunaway, who has a 1-4 record as a pitcher with a 3.82 ERA.
"It was one of the better games that he's pitched this year but he's been like that throughout the whole season," Maryknoll coach Randy Yamashiro said. "He's had maybe one bad game, but he still gave us six innings in that game. The thing is he's been a very constant performer and a very solid presence on the mound for us and that game was just a great culmination of the steadiness that he's shown all year."
Dunaway started the year with a 13-strikeout performance in a 1-0 loss to Saint Louis in his first appearance on the mound, but had struggled in his three most recent starts. He was roughed up for seven runs by Mid-Pacific, six runs by Kamehameha and eight runs by Iolani — all losses for the Spartans.
"The thing I liked about his game Friday was he struggled a little bit in his last couple outings but he had to learn to pitch around that and go to different pitches," Yamashiro said. "The approach he took was kind of what a pro goes through where sometimes some of his pitches aren't working in certains innings and he had to battle through that. Basically he did what he had to do and made adjustments and went with it and he pitched an awesome game."
Dunaway threw 112 pitches in the game, 63 of them for strikes. It was the first time the Warriors were shutout this season.
"He took something off here, he put some movement on it there and he did it in a way where it helped the ball club," Yamashiro said. "It was a real gutty performance from him and from a coaching standpoint it was just awesome to watch."
After playing mostly first base last year, Dunaway has been thrust into pitching duties in 2016 with a season-ending injury to starter Jarred Kaneshiro, who earned First Team All-Hawaii honors as a sophomore last year.
"We always knew from his freshman year that he could throw, but we didn't want to rush anybody and we wanted to try to develop him properly, so last year we started to have him throw some bullpens and a little bit here and there," Yamashiro said. "Once it was official that we lost Kaneshiro I told Matt that he was going to have to start games, but that boy is a warrior. He had a lot of fire, he wants to do well this year he's been able to hone that fire and that fierceness."
Dunaway has allowed 29 hits in 33 innings pitched. He has recorded 31 strikeouts and given up 17 walks.
"I wouldn't consider him a strikeout pitcher even though he gets his share of strikeouts," Yamashiro said. "I would consider him a complete pitcher. Does he have room for improvement? Sure and he'll tell you that, but he knows it's not all on him. He has our defense making plays behind him and they've saved his butt sometimes and yet he's come through and strikes out some guys, too, so it works both ways."
It's been a trying season for the Spartans, who moved up to Division I this year after winning the past two D2 state crowns. They lost their first seven games before picking up their first win, but Yamashiro said the effort of his players have not wavered.
"They work hard and they're not quitting," Yamashiro said. "They just say, ‘OK, let's go play. They just love playing baseball and I think they have kind of bought into our team goals."
Yamashiro said despite being in last place in the D1 standing of the ultra competitive Interscholastic League of Honolulu, he has thoroughly enjoyed his time with this group of players.
"I'm loving it. I was telling the kids that some people would say to just throw in the towel and just quit, but I see them working hard and trying to get better and it motivates me; that's the kind of atmosphere we've got right now," Yamashiro said. "That's kind of making me not want to have this season end, even though our record is what it is."
Dunaway and the Spartans (2-12) close out the regular season against Iolani Thursday at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park.
Female Athlete of the Week: Danielle Cervantes, Campbell softballDanielle Cervantes was … her usual self last week.
The Campbell junior turned in a pair of solid pitching performances last week in wins over Kapolei and Leilehua.
Cervantes, a 5-foot-8 right-hander, tossed two complete games for the Sabers, who are 9-0 on the year and remain ranked atop the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Softball Power Rankings — where they have been all season.
In a 4-2 win at fourth-ranked Kapolei last Monday, Cervantes rebounded from a two-run third inning — the first time Campbell trailed all season — to finished with six strikeouts and no walks. She scattered six hits over seven innings against the Hurricanes.
"I was impressed because she really hit her spots and changed speeds well," Campbell coach Shag Hermosura said. "Kapolei had those two runs but she battled back and finished strong."
Five days later, Cervantes was even better in a 4-0 win at Leilehua. She had a no-hitter going through the fifth inning and ended up surrounding just three hits with nine strikeouts and one walk against the Mules.
"We didn't hit as well as I wanted us to hit, but she still threw her game," Hermosura said. "She kept them off-balance, struck out girls when she had to, worked the outside of the plate. She's learning that she can get a foul ball for a strike, too, and not everything has to be fast, fast, fast. She did made good adjustments during that Leilehua game.
Cervantes, who is 4-0 on the year with a 0.52 ERA, has given up just four runs — two of them unearned — on 12 hits all year. She has notched 35 strikeouts and given up just five walks in 27 innings of work.
"She wants the ball and she's come a long way," Hermosura said. "She's a person that works hard on her craft and at getting stronger each day. She shows it during practice every day and she's showing a lot of confidence and I have a lot of confidence in her."
It is Cervantes' third varsity season. She was promoted after competing on the JV team as a freshman, but played sparingly on the varsity that year. As a sophomore she also saw limited playing time behind Elisa Favela, a First Team All-Hawaii selection last year. Favela led the Sabers to a state championship last year and was named Most Outstanding Player at the state tournament. Favela is back for her senior season, but Hermosura said Cervantes has closed the gap on her this year.
"She's throwing harder to me than Favela is right now and she can hit 60, 61 (miles per hour)," Hermosura said. "Dani is more seasoned this year than last year because of the hard work she's put in. She's proven herself lately, but I have a high level of confidence in both girls, irregardless of who we're playing. They both come out and they right to the end. The girls respect both plays and they know what each girl can do."
Hermosura said he isn't surprised by Cervantes' emergence this season given her work ethic in the offseason.
"She does her running on her own — whether it's two miles with some long toss two days before her start or 15 to 20 wind sprints to work on her explosion off the rubber — but that's really helped her legs handle the innings she's throwing," Hermosura said. "She works hard in the weight room. Last year she worked hard to get to this point, but this year she's always giving it her all and it's paying off."
In addition to her improved strength, Cervantes has become more of a pitcher and less of a thrower, Hermosura said.
"Dani doesn't make many mistake pitches," Hermosura said. "She throws various pitches and the thing about it is she knows where to throw the pitches and when she's got to give it a little after or make the ball move. She's gotten really better hitting the inside and the outside. She knows when she can overpower a girl and when she has to be a little more crafty. I'll still call the pitches, but she knows how to throw it and when it needs to be thrown harder or when to take something off of it."
Hermosura said the communication between player and coach has also improved this year.
"She comes in and we talk and she knows when she maybe gets away with a pitch here or there," Hermosura said. "If she gets rattled, she doesn't show it. She just comes back and fights back. She's very humble and she pushes — not so much verbally toward the team — but she pushes within herself on the mound and does her part as a teammate, not an individual."
