KAILUA - Running back Kaeo Batacan rushed for 102 yards and three touchdowns and Kamehameha-Hawaii downed Kalaheo, 21-6, Saturday night in non-league prep football at Kailua High's Alex Kane Stadium.

The Warriors (1-0), ranked fifth in the Hawaiian Electric Division II Power Rankings, stormed out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead and held off several threats from the No. 8 Mustangs (0-1) before securing the game with Batacan's third TD of the game in the fourth period.

Warriors' starting quarterback Kamakana Pagan led the first two scoring drives that resulted in TD runs by Batacan.  But an apparent foot injury left him on crutches after the game.  Backup Dallas Duarte, in his first year playing football, was pressed into action and his third pass of the game was intercepted by Cody Barbadillo and eventually led to Kalaheo's only score of the game to pull the Mustangs to 14-6 at the half.

Duarte, the starting catcher for the baseball team as a freshman, showed his inexperience, completing 6 of 12 passes for 30 yards, while throwing two interceptions.  Despite the growing pains, KSH coach Dan Lyons was pleased considering Duarte's lack of experience.

"Never played football before; he's a sophomore and came in and I think he did an excellent job," Lyons said.

"Kamakana was doing a really good job," Duarte said of KSH's starting QB. "I was proud of him. He's my role model; I was watching after him…I really hope he gets better."

With Pagan, the Warriors had sustained scoring drives of 12 plays covering 86 yards and 17 plays covering 97 yards.

But the Mustangs could not take advantage of Warriors' lull on offense after their first two scores.  While they cashed in on Barbadillo's interception to set up a TD, the Mustangs failed to convert after an interception by Tristan Thulin-Marsh early in the fourth quarter.  The Warriors' defense sacked Mark Lehrner and forced a fumble that was eventually recyled into Batacan's third rushing TD.

"We threw that quick pick that brought them back into the game," Lyons said. "I thought our defense did an excellent job of not really breaking."

Ethanjames Ramos and Daylan Calicdan had interceptions for KSH to stall the Mustangs' ability to rally.

Kalaheo did have an apparent 82-yard TD pass from Lehrner to Nathan Hernandez nullified by a personal foul penalty 13 yards after the catch just before the half.

The Mustangs' only score, which came after Barbadillo's pick, came on an eight-play, 26-yard drive that ended with Lehrner's 2-yard TD pass to Thulin-Marsh with 3:48 left in the half. The PAT was blocked and kept the score, 14-6.

Kalaheo's Hernandez had a strong outing. He led all receivers with eight catches for 83 yards and would have nearly doubled that output if his TD was not nullified by the penalty.

The Mustangs open their Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II regular season Saturday against defending champion Nanakuli, which is ranked No. 1.

The Warriors continue non-league play when they travel to Maui to play King Kekaulike.
