State baseball tournament tidbits

Since the 12-team format in 1986 or 29 years, the top seed has won nine times, the second seed four. This will be the eighth time the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds will meet for the championship.

In the six- and eight-team format from 1959 to 1985, or 27 years, the top seed won 12 times. Back then, teams were seeded by perceived strength, so it wasn't surprising to see two ILH or two OIA teams seeded in the top four.

Mid-Pacific is seeking its sixth title, which would third most all-time.  Punahou leads with 13 followed Iolani's eight. The Owls are 5-5 in title games.

1990 Beat Waianae, 16-3

1991 Beat Waianae, 8-3

1992 Beat Kamehameha, 4-3

1995 Lost to Baldwin, 9-2

1998 Lost to Iolani, 4-1

1999 Lost to Molokai, 6-2

2001 Lost to Kailua, 9-8

2002 Beat Kamehameha, 6-3 (won as an unseeded team)

2004 Lost Punahou, 6-0

2013 Beat Mililani, 3-1

Mid-Pacific has 38 championship bracket wins, third all-time behind Punahou's 56 and Iolani's 39. MPI has 49 totals win in tournament history behind Punahou's 60 and Baldwin's 54.

Campbell is seeking its first title since 1978, its only crown and only other appearance in the championship game.

The Sabers are 11-9 in championship bracket games, 14-14 overall.

1978 Beat Kamehameha, 2-1

Outstanding pitching has marked this tournament. Will the title game surpass Friday's 10-inning duel between Kamehameha's Codie Paiva and Campbell's Ian Kahaloa?

There have been 16 no-hitters in the tournament history, two in Division II. The last no-hitter was May 9, 2013, when Waianae's Tevita Lalau threw a 5-inning, 10-run-rule-shortenend game, 10-0, against Kaimuki in the quarterfinals.

The last in Division I was May 11, 2012 by Quintin Torres-Costa (six innings) and Kodi Medeiros (one innings) in Waiakea's 5-2 win against Baldwin for the championship.

Punahou's Glenn Goya threw the only perfect game to cap the 1972 title in a 5-0 win against Saint Louis. It was the last nine-inning no-hitter. Seven-inning contests were adopted in 1989.
