WAIPAHU — Waianae continued its winning ways with a straight set victory over Waipahu Tuesday night.

A crowd of about 100 were on hand to witness the visiting Seariders sweep past the Marauders, 25-17, 25-18, to improve to 8-0 atop the Oahu Interscholastic Association West Division standings. Waipahu suffered its second straight loss of the year, dropping 5-2 in league play.

"They've just been clicking," said Waianae coach Wilhelm Wagner. "Everything we run is straight from practice. If we see mistakes we correct them. Sometimes people take it hard, but they come back the next day and realize that's what they had to work on. They're just hungry."

Waianae is just one win away from clinching the OIA West's top seed in the league's postseason tournament. Last season the Seariders finished fourth in the regular season, going 7-3.

"We're just keeping up this win streak by never thinking we're at the top," said junior outside hitter Hezekiah Agiga. "We always remind ourselves of how we were last year and we always stay humble."

Agiga had seven kills, four digs and an ace to lead the Seariders in the win. Nayton Kuresa added four kills and Akoni Faumuina had three kills and three blocks. Libero Jonah Poe had two kills and seven digs while setter Jahren Muliagatele had 13 assists.

Leading the Marauders in the loss was sophomore Jeminae Solomua with seven kills and a match-high eight digs. Andrew Simanu added three kills, three blocks and three digs and setter Christian Ramoran had 12 assists, six digs and a dump.

The first set started off close with both teams trading points until it was 6-all. After Waipahu went up 7-6, Waianae went on a 10-0 run to take full control of the set.

"I think we just had to wake up and stop being comfortable," said Agiga. "We just woke up and made everything count. Everybody stayed consistent and we all knew what to do with the ball."

Waianae's run was spurred on by six straight errors from the Marauders, and capped by an ace from Poe. The Seariders took their largest lead of the match, 22-10, on a kill attempt from Kuresa. Waipahu called its final timeout of the set at this point.

"My kids were just getting frustrated, we had to settle down," said Waipahu coach Julna Pasicaran. "We're very inexperienced. Half of our starters are first year players."

But the Marauders fought back, going on a 7-2 run to make it a six-point game, 23-17, which forced a Waianae timeout. After regrouping, the Seariders scored the next two points to win the first set.

Waianae jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the second set. This helped the Seariders maintain the lead as the Marauders started to get into a rhythm. Waipahu was able to keep up for the most part, making it 18-14 at one point, but could never gain enough momentum to take the lead.

"We've been able to make runs all season, but Waianae is tough," said Pasicaran. "They got players all around that that can play their position and play well. They picked up on most of the balls that we put down and it kind of forced us to have to change our offense. This was the first game where we've actually been challenged. I can honestly say that we lost because they were better than us."

The Seariders wrap up league play with games against Waialua and Campbell. Waipahu travels to play Leilehua next Tuesday.
