PEARL CITY - An amped up Pearl City team wasted little time finding the net in downing Roosevelt, 3-1, Monday night in the opening round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I girls' soccer tournament at Bino Neves Stadium.

The Chargers (8-2-1) will play East champion Kahuku (8-0-2), 7 p.m. Tuesday at Carleton E. Weimer Field.

In the other first-round game at Pearl City, Moanalua beat Waianae (0-7-4), 3-0. Na Menehune (8-2-1) will meet West runner-up Aiea (7-1-2) in the 5:30 p.m. game at Kahuku.

"We're just going to play like we did today," Pearl City's Randi Fontes said. "We're going to play hard and try to score early again."

Less than a minute into the game, the Chargers moved down the left sideline quickly. Bethany Nazareno crossed the ball toward the top of the goal area, where Nikki Suwa drilled her shot to put Pearl City up, 1-0.

"We lit them up right away," Pearl City coach Frank Baumholtz said. "That was the main thing. We did that very well. We worked hard on that and tried to play as a team and not worry about who scores."

Five minutes later, Fontes found an open net from about three yards. It was chaos at the net when goalkeeper Mahealani Cariasso was drawn toward right side of the goal, as the ball got loose in the middle for Fontes.

"It affected us," Roosevelt coach Shaina Caparoz said of the Chargers' early surge. "Caught us off guard. They threw us for a good one."

The Rough Riders got their composure at the 30th minute when Caitlin Tatemichi ripped a direct kick from 20 yards out to pull Roosevelt to 2-1.

"We had a couple silly fouls," Baumholtz said. "We gave them that one goal. (No.) 15 (Tatemichi) is very good. She kicked that ball hard and put it in the corner, which was outstanding."

Pearl City gave itself breathing room in the 49th minute when Fontes crossed the ball to Brittny Ihara, who scored from about four yards to make it 3-1. Baumholtz was pleased with Fontes' all-around play.

"I looked up, saw her and got it in (to Ihara)," Fontes said of her assist.

"She did today what we wanted her to do against Mililani (in last week's regular-season finale)," Baumholtz said. "She really came on tonight. Everyone was on fire. They were jacked-up before the game, laughing, talking to each other. That's good for our girls."

MOANALUA 3, WAIANAE 0

In the early game, Moanalua also wasted little time in dispatching Waianae with three first-half goals.

Anessa Ridley scored in the fifth and 29th minutes, while Hoku Afong scored in the 25th minute.

AT KAPOLEI

KAPOLEI 1, CASTLE 0 (2 OT) (PKs 3-2)

Thanks to goalkeeper Ebony Tupua, the Hurricanes (6-4-1) needed only four of their five penalty kickers to oust the Knights (6-3-2) from the tournament.

The game was scoreless after the 80-minute regulation time and two 10-minute overtime periods.

Tupua saved two shots during the PKs.

"My team told me to believe in my hands, trust in my heart and trust in my team and I did," Tupua said. "Just to keep the pressure off."

Alexis Repolio, Kayla Alcott and Shandy Hopeau - Kapolei's first three kickers - made their shots. Kayla Villanueva's shot was deflected above the net by Castle's keeper.

The Hurricanes will play West champion Mililani (9-0-1), 7 p.m. Tuesday at John Kauinana Stadium.

During the regular season, Mililani edged Kapolei, 1-0.

"Super confident," Tupua said of facing the Trojans again. "We lost 1-0 and we're excited. This is the game we all looked forward to and we're going to win tomorrow."

CAMPBELL 1, KAILUA 0

Aliani Lorenzo's first-half goal was all the Sabers (8-2-1) needed to advance to Tuesday's semifinal against East runner-up Kaiser (8-1-1) at Mililani. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
