Male Athlete of the Week: Juwon Bohannon, Kalani basketball
Juwon Bohannon picked a nice time to get open.

The senior forward scored the game-winning basket on an easy bank shot from deep in the paint with two seconds to play to lift Kalani to a thrilling 78-77 double-overtime win over rival Kaiser Saturday night.

Bohannon set a screen at the top of the arc for teammate Alexander Tungpalan, but both defenders stayed on Tungpalan and Bohannon flashed open on the block.

"We just did a flat screen to (Tungpalan) and he was supposed to take it, but the two guys went on him so it just left me open so he just dished it to me and I just finished," said Bohannon, who dedicated the win to a pair of teammates who didn't finish the game.

"We just played our hearts out and we saw Cory (Mitchell) got hurt and we saw Jaron (Yamauchi) play his heart out and he fouled out so we just wanted to finish it for them," said Bohannon, who grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and had two blocks and an assist.

Tungpalan finished with 16 points and Yamauchi and Jeremy Robinson added 13 points apiece.

"The last play was actually for Tungpalan at the top and with Mitchell out, Yamauchi out — those guys are our primary ball handlers and we call Alex our emergency ball point guard — and the play was for him to get a screen at the top and try and make something happen and of course he was probably looking for his jumper first, but it was a nice dime to Juwon for the win," Falcons' coach Nathan Davis said.

It was the regular-season opener for Kalani, which went 4-7 against a rugged preseason schedule after reaching the Division II state final last season, where it fell to Hawaii Prep, 42-33.

"We were playing hard teams during preseason to make sure that we were ready for the D2 teams, so we're just glad we're pushing our momentum through into the regular season," Bohannon said.

The win over Kalani Saturday was an important one — not just because the Cougars are the defending Oahu Interscholastic Association D2 champions.

"I think it's a huge win for us — our players always get up for this — it's a rivalry," Davis said. "We're facing the school up the street, and our fans, our teachers, faculty, administrators, they all come out to watch this one and it's just another chapter in a great rivalry and I'm happy a lot of people came out and supported us. That's how we were able to come out and get the win."

Bohannon and the Falcons (1-0) resume their schedule visit they Castle Wednesday and host Farrington Saturday.

Female Athlete of the Week: Alexis Pana, Hilo basketball
Things are coming together nicely for Alexis Pana and the Hilo girls basketball team.

The Vikings have run their record to a perfect 4-0 in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation and are the No. 6 team in the ScoringLive/OC16 Power Rankings.

Pana, daughter of the head coach, is averaging a team-best 13.3 points per game and is coming off back-to-back games in which she scored a combined 39 points. She had a season-high 23 points in a win over Waiakea two weeks ago and a game-high 16 points in Saturday's 62-33 win over ninth-ranked Kamehameha-Hawaii.

"She's starting to grow as a leader," said Ben Pana, Alexis' coach and father. "Watching her on the court, she's starting to take over at certain points of the game when we really needed her."

Alexis' success shouldn't come as a surprise. She was a First Team All-Hawaii selection as a sophomore last season.

"Her leadership and court vision are improving with every game and every practice she's getting better at different parts of her game," Ben Pana said. "I'm really glad that she was able to step up in that way and everybody is following in that lead.

The Vikings have been on the rise in Ben Pana's six seasons at the helm. They push perennial league and state powerhouse Konawaena in BIIF play last year and made a run to the semifinals of the Division I state tournament. They eventually placed fourth, a year after finished third.

Ben Pana said the margin of victory against Kamehameha-Hawaii — the reigning D2 state champion — was unexpected.

"I was really surprised because with every game we go into, you don't know what kind of attitude the kids come in with, but they came in focused and I think it's the right time of the season to be focused," Pana said. "We're about the halfway mark into the season and it feels like the kids are coming in with the right focus and we're starting to peak at the right time."

Alexis Pana, a 5-foot-9 forward who does a little bit of everything for the Vikings, is part of an experienced junior class that her father says "everything falls back to."

"The thing I like about that junior is the chemistry they've got from playing together," Ben Pana said. "Four of our nine juniors have been playing together since they were seven years old, so they know each other like the back of their hand so there's cohesion. We do have two seniors, but the strength of our program is our junior class."

There is an added bonus for the Vikings this season is some new digs.

"We finally have a place we can call home," Ben Pana said of Hilo's brand new 1,350-seat gym. "Over the last six years we've always played at different county facilities. It was the only choice we had, so having a new gym is a sense of pride for the kids and it gives us extra motivation as coaches just knowing that we have our own home and we have to be better at defending our house. It's a beautiful facility."

Pana and the Vikings return to the court Wednesday when they host Pahoa before visiting Kau Saturday.
