SALT LAKE — Kahuku swept Kamehameha-Maui, 25-11, 25-16, 27-25 in the opening round of the New City Nissan Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I Girls Volleyball State Championships at Moanalua High School on Friday evening. The Red Raiders advance to the quarterfinals to play second seeded Moanalua tomorrow at 5 pm, while the Warriors play Mililani at 3:30 pm.
Carey Williams led the Red Raiders with nine service aces, nine kills and seven digs, Phoebe Grace added nine kills and Jasmine Niutupuivaha chipped in seven kills.
"We worked as a team and it was our team working hard. Everyone was relaxed and ready to play," said Williams.
"She was on fire," said Kahuku coach Lee Lamb, on Williams. "She was unstoppable and she was in a good space tonight and that's the best I've seen her so we're peaking at the right time and hopefully it will carry over to the Moanalua match and we'll definitely need her to come up big again."
Kahuku attacked and was aggressive early as they jumped out to an 11-1 lead after Williams' fourth service ace in the first set. The Red Raiders held a 10 point lead for most of the set. Niutupuivaha did most of the damage in the first set, tallying six of her seven kills.
"The serving was really good for us tonight and we were struggling with first contact throughout the season and we were able to take care of the ball," said Lamb, whose team finished with 12 service aces for the match.
The Warriors kept it close in the beginning of the second set, but the Red Raiders were able to pull away after Williams' two service aces to make it, 11-7. Kahuku extended the lead to seven after Brittany Waite's block and middle blocker Phoebe Grace had two consecutive kills to help the Red Raiders take the second set, 25-16.
"We've been working on cleaning up the defensive side of the ball and make sure we generate some quality opportunities, it looked really good tonight and hopefully it will carry forward to tomorrow," said Lamb.
In the third set, Kahuku held a 17-11 lead after Nuumau Coleman nailed a kill. However, the Warriors roared back on a 6-0 run after a Red Raiders hitting error to tie the game. Both teams traded points and Kahuku was able to take a 24-22 lead after a KS-Maui net violation. Williams added six kills in the set. However, two consecutive Kahuku errors tied the game at 24. Grace stepped up with two kills to end the set and claim the match.
"That's good recognition on ShaRae's part. She knew who she had to go to when the game is on the line and make sure they closed out. It was good awareness on her part," said Lamb. Niu finished the match with 36 of Kahuku's 39 assists.
"We had to push because we were pretty tired from the first and second set, but we had to push each other finish the set," said Williams.
Kahuku lost to Moanalua in three sets on Oct. 1, and Lamb hopes the game experience tonight carries over to tomorrow night's matchup.
"This is a great confidence booster for us to come in and execute at the level we did going into a match playing at that level so we're excited for the re-do," said Lamb.
KS-Maui's Danielle Brown and Selai Damuni each had seven kills and Aliyah Ayau had 20 assists.
