WAIPAHU— The Molokai Farmers were hindered by seven errors as Kauai took advantage to advance to the Division II semifinals of the Wally Yonomine Foundation/Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Baseball Championships, 8-0.

"It was big we didn’t know what to expect from them (Molokai) coming in," said Kauai coach Greg Killen. "Our whole goal is always to put the ball in play, make things happen, they made a few mistakes and we capitalized on them."

It was the final game of the night at Hans L’Orange Park that featured two Neighbor Island teams Wednesday evening.

Lost behind the errors was a fabulous pitching performance by junior right-hander Cal Koga. Koga went six strong innings, striking out eight, and allowed only one hit.

"I thought he changed speeds well not only speed but also elevation up down in and out of the zone," said Molokai coach Mike McCutcheon. "He located well and pitched a good game for them."

Through the first two and a half innings it seemed like the crowd of about 200 were in store for a pitcher’s duel. Koga and Molokai starter Nohi Myer matched each other pitch-for-pitch early on.

The Kauai Red Raiders did most of their damage in the third inning, when they scored five runs off two hits and benefited from three Farmers' errors.

"We just made some mistakes. There’s nothing you can do about it," McCutcheon said. "We come out here, prepare the best we can and the ball didn’t fall our way today."

Still looking for their first base hit, Kauai’s Keala Iwasaki hit a high chopper to third and was able to beat it out the throw to first.  A sacrifice and a walk later brought shortstop Shane Ogata to the plate. Ogata delivered with a two-RBI double into the left field corner.

Then with two outs three straight errors by the Farmers brought in three runs for the Red Raiders to make it 5-0.

Koga struck out the side in fifth and continued his dominance as he did not allow another hit in the game from that point on.

"My fastball was working well. Two strikes I was coming in high on the hitters," Koga said. "Later on I tried to get strikes over with curve balls. That worked really well for me. That’s why I got a lot of strike outs."

"He was awesome again, he’s been pitching that way all year," Killeen said. "He’s a bulldog out there. When you get him out there he’s going to pitch his heart out."

The Red Raiders added three more in bottom of the sixth profiting from two more Molokai errors.

Kauai is looking for their first Division II title since 2011.

The Red Raiders advanced to face the top seed in the Division II tournament and reigning state champion Maryknoll Thursday at 1 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.

"It’s going to take our best game to beat them," Killeen said. "They’re a good team. I got to watch them today they’re going to be tough for us."
