Hawaii Baptist Academy defeated Seabury Hall, 21-25, 26-24, 25-12 and 25-20 to capture their fourth straight D2 state title in the 2014 New City Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II State Championship at the Neil S. Blaisdell Center on Saturday night. The Eagles met the Spartans before in 2011 and 2012 and beat them in three straight sets each year.

“It’s huge for our program and in beginning it was rough, but we were able to pick it up and pull through and that’s what we’re all about,” said Caleb Fisher.

“This team is unlike the other three. They’re real young and inexperienced in the state tournament and just finding their roles and making significant improvements two weeks ago at a good time for us and I’m proud of them for that,” said Teoni Obrey.

Caleb Fisher had 28 kills and 14 digs, Issac Liva had 18 kills and nine digs, Matthew Kishaba had 22 digs and Nicolas Caballes had 14 digs, and BJ Hosaka had 51 assists to lead the Eagles.

“First of all, I have to give all the glory to God and my teammates and fueled me whenever I messed up and the coaches changed me and I improved so much,” said Issac Liva.

“It’s exciting to see them grow into that role and our upperclassmen look at them in order for them to be successful and put balls away for us,” said Obrey, on his sophomores Liva and Fisher.

Seabury Hall took the first set, 25-21 and gave the Eagles all they could handle in the second set, but Hawaii Baptist was able to prevail, 26-24.

“I think the big thing was we came out nervous in the first two sets so we were anxious and we had to get over it and just play our best and play hard,” said Liva.

Hawaii Baptist won the third set and used a 7-0 run to eventually close out the set. Caleb Fisher put the Eagles up 10, 22-12 and Seabury called a timeout. The Eagles would win, 25-12.

“We started to play next point and focusing on getting the next ball and siding out,” said Fisher.

“They pass really well and dug a lot of balls in the first two sets. Maybe in the third set our serves and we were hitting our spots and have things go our way and creating separation and gave more confidence going into the fourth set,” said Obrey.

In the fourth set, the Eagles went up, 12-7 and the Spartans called a timeout. Hawaii Baptist started pulling away and went up, 21-12. Seabury Hall went on a 4-0 run to make it, 21-16 and the Eagles called a timeout. Hawaii Baptist won, 25-20 after Jordan Kauwe and Brett Miller combined for a block.

“Everyone contributes something to the win, either passing or blocking,” said Liva.

Makena Jost had 15 kills, Blake Rizzo had 10 kills and 8 blocks, Kyle Stisher had 23 digs and Aikala Mohalu had 10 digs for the Spartans.
