Dayanan's layup at the buzzer lifts Campbell past Leilehua, 41-40

'EWA BEACH - In a span of five seconds, emotions ran the gamut for Campbell's Gilbert Dayanan and Leilehua's Joseph Gouty.

Dayanan raced two-thirds the length of the court to make the game-winning layup - one that slowly spun and hung around the rim seemingly forever - to rally the Sabers to a 41-40 white-knuckle win against the Mules in a quarterfinal of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red boys' basketball tournament Thursday night at Campbell.

The Sabers (10-1), the Western Division champion, will meet East runner-up Kalaheo (10-2) in a semifinal Feb. 11 at McKinley. The Mustangs beat Radford, 66-32, in another quarterfinal. Campbell and Kalaheo have secured Division I state tournament berths. Leilehua and Radford will meet in a fifth-place semifinal Feb. 11 at Radford. The winner earns a state berth.

The Mules trailed for 31 minutes, 54 seconds before taking their first lead of the game with five seconds left. Trailing 39-36 with 7.6 seconds left, Gouty converted a one-and-one to pull the Mules to within one. Gouty stole Dayanan's inbounds pass near the baseline and was fouled in the act of shooting by Dayanan with five seconds left. Gouty made both free throws to put the Mules ahead, 40-39.

After a timeout by Leilehua, Isaac Hurd inbounded the ball to Dayanan in the back court. Dayanan raced down the court for his layup, which spun slowly around the rim before falling, at the buzzer in an incredible turn of events before a crowd of about 250 that let out a deafening cheer.

"I wish I could relive that moment," Dayanan said. "It was probably the best moment of my life."

It came seconds after what might have been his worst.

"Whatever happened, happened," Dayanan said of the turnover that put the Mules ahead. "I still had faith in my team."

"He just got caught up in the moment," Campbell coach Wyatt Tau said, "but he came through when it counted the most."

Dayanan was mobbed by teammates after the game.

"Gilbert's a tough player, give him credit," Leilehua coach Pat Wetzel said. "We just wanted to keep everything in front of us. If we were up three, we could've fouled, send him to the line. But, hey, he made a nice play. You have to tip your hat to them."

The Sabers were anticipating pressure at the point of inbounds and were looking to make a long pass, hence the quarterback Hurd as the inbounder. But the Mules were backed up and Hurt put the ball in hands of Dayanan, the team's leading scorer averaging 11.5 points per game in league play.

"The plan was for the deep ball, the deep throw," Campbell coach Wyatt Tau said. "If no more, then I got two guys coming down the lane. If no more nothing on the outside, look for something in the middle, so that's exactly what Gilbert did."

Campbell could have made the outcome less dramatic with more efficiency from the free-throw line. The Sabers were 7 of 13 in free-throw shooting. Leading 39-36 with 40 seconds left, Dayanan missed the front end of a one-and-one. Twenty-three seconds later, Jomar Jett Gapusan did the same, keeping the Mules within a one-possession game.

Gouty, who led the Mules with 12 points, was 10 of 12 from the free-throw line. The Mules were 14 of 18 from the line.

Dayanan finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Lamart Dudley, Campbell's leading scorer in the game, was the Sabers' offensive force in the first half, when he scored all of his 12 points. He fouled out late in the third quarter. He also had six rebounds, a steal and a block.

Jayce Bantolina had just six points, but had five rebounds and three steals.

Bryan Mason added 11 points for the Mules with six rebounds.
