KAPOLEI - Jaelan Subia-Etrata had two interceptions and recovered one of four Kapolei lost fumbles and No. 6 Campbell rolled to a 29-13 win to spoil the Hurricanes' homecoming Friday night.

The Sabers clinched no worse than the second seed in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West with their 4-1 record (6-1 overall). The top two teams from each division draw first-round byes for the 12-team OIA tournament.

The Hurricanes played considerably well considering their numerous injuries, especially at quarterback. True backup Brandon Cambra replaced fifth-string QB Mason Alfaro, despite nursing a sore shoulder, in the second quarter. But Cambra showed some rust from not playing since Aiea game some three weeks ago. Kapolei (3-4, 2-3) turned over the ball seven times, three on interceptions and four from fumbles. That doesn't include the four other fumbles Kapolei did not lose.

"We rolled the dice, we gave him a shot," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. "He was rusty...he played hard. I'm proud of the kids. I love these kids. Nobody quit. Nobody complained. They played their hearts out, they played hard."

Kapolei just couldn't capitalize when it got turnovers. There was a series in the first quarter where the teams turned over the ball on five consecutive series, but it was the Hurricanes' who coughed up the ball the fifth time that eventually led to Campbell's second TD of the game.

"I thought our defense played pretty well," Hernandez said. "We had short fields and when you give a good team like that many gifts, it's going to come back and hurt you."

Again, the Sabers were saved by their defense. Campbell turned three lost fumbles by Kapolei into scores.

"We gave it away," Hernandez said. "But they created those turnovers. They played well on defense and were able to make big plays when they had to."

The Sabers got two TD passes from Justin Tago-Su'e, a 22-yard strike to Amosa Amosa Jr. on the first series of the game and an 11-yarder to Keoni Piceno in the second quarter that made it 19-0 with 7:16 left in the half. Tago-Su'e was 14 of 21 for 195 yards, but was intercepted twice.

"We kind of need to clean up some things here and there on offense," Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said. "We run one play with big yardage and the very next time we run the play, we don't read the blocks or we miss a block here or there.

"Because we run a lot of counters, people do a lot of slanting. If they slant the right time, it's kind of hard. They were giving us the outside, so we were countering to the outside."

After the Sabers scored their first TD to go ahead, 7-0, they got the ball back on a Joshua Torres interception. But Campbell lost a fumble, only to get the ball back when Kapolei fumbled. But Kaeo Kanoa had his first of two interceptions of the game to give Kapolei the ball back. Yet again, the Hurricanes fumbled it away at their 19, where Aries Pihi scored on first down to make it 13-0 after Subia-Etrata missed the PAT.

Torres had his second interception of the game nullified by a roughing the passer penalty, but Kapolei ended up punting from Campbell's 45. Torres returned the ball 39 yards to the Sabers' 44. A personal foul against Kapolei on the play moved the Sabers to the Hurricanes' 41, setting up Tago-Su'e's 11-yard TD pass to Piceno. Campbell's pass on the 2-point conversion failed, keeping it 19-0.

Subia-Etrata got the first of his two picks in the second quarter, but Campbell eventually punted. Kapolei took over with 3:22 left in the half, reaching the Sabers' 46 with 1:27 left. After a Kapolei timeout, the Hurricanes used a hook-and-lateral to score. Cambra hit Patrick Wallace-Williams for a five-yard reception; the receiver then lateraled the ball to the speedy Devin Jenkins, who completed the 46-yard TD pass play by running the final 41 yards to pull Kapolei to 19-7.

Campbell lost a fumble on its first play from scrimmage after the ensuing kickoff at the Campbell 28. But Subia-Etrata's second pick with 33 seconds left prevented the Hurricanes from turning the momentum.

"We just executed every time," Subia-Etrata said of defense. "We just aligned correctly and we just do everything correctly."

Kanoa had his second interception of the game on Campbell's first series of the second half. But following a recurring theme, the Hurricanes lost a fumble at their 20, setting up a 20-yard field goal by Subia-Etrata to make it 22-7.

Early in the fourth quarter, Kapolei fumbled again and Torres picked up the loose ball and returned it 31 yards for a TD to make it 29-7.

The Hurricanes would get on the board against midway through the fourth quarter when they blocked a punt in the end zone, where Keanu Kaina recovered it for a TD to make it 29-13.

Kapolei defensive tackle Papu Uti suited for the game for the first time this season after getting clearance from his personal physician. He wore a prosthetic for his amputated left leg, but did not play because he was not cleared by the school's trainers.
