Kaleb Gilmore scored a season-high 30 points and Josh Burnett added 21 to lead Maryknoll to a 69-60 win over Iolani in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game Saturday night.

The Spartans (16-2 overall, 3-0 ILH) rallied from an early first-quarter deficit, built a big lead only to see the Raiders (12-5, 2-1) pull within one possession before separating in the fourth quarter before a capacity crowd of about 350 spectators at the Iolani Lower Gym.

"It's awesome, that was a big win," Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant said, whose team is the reigning ILH Division I champion and state runner-up.

Maryknoll, the No. 2 team in the ScoringLive/OC16 Boys Basketball Power Rankings, shot 43.8 percent from the field, including 54.2 percent in the second half while No. 3 Iolani was held to 32 percent on field goals. Gilmore, a junior guard, shot 10 of 18 from the field, including 4 of 6 on 3-pointers and scored 22 points after halftime.

"He played awesome," Grant said of Gilmore. "He's so quick, it's hard to guard him. That kind of stuff you cannot teach."

Gilmore, who entered the game ranked second in the ILH with 20 points per game, scored on numerous easy lay-ups and fastbreaks and also routinely got to the free-throw line, where he was 6 of 7.

"We try to run certain plays for him, so that way he can get to an open position so we can run a play," Grant said. "If he can run past guys though, there's no sense running plays for him."

Maryknoll scored 18 points off of 21 Iolani turnovers, while committing 15 turnovers of its own.

"I was really worried about their pressure — they switched from man, jump-man and then they went into a triangle," Grant said of the Raiders' defense. "The kids persevered — we worked on this stuff during the summer time, working on Punahou's traps and Iolani's traps and I thought we did a pretty good job. We've been only averaging about nine turnovers a game, I know we had a lot more because they do a great job on defense, but we hit free throws, got into foul trouble early in the third and fourth quarters, we held our own, we got them into foul trouble. Kaleb hit some shots at the free-throw line and Josh hit some free throws, too."

The Spartans were 22 of 31 from the free-throw line, including a 10-of-12 effort by Burnett, who also grabbed seven rebounds. The Raiders, who shot 22 of 34 on free throws, were in the double-bonus with two minutes left in the third quarter.

"That was really tough, we had to play defense, but not foul and that was just hell," said Gilmore.

Iolani held a 12-8 lead after the first quarter, but Maryknoll took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Burnett with one minute and 45 seconds left in the first half. The Spartans closed out the second quarter on a 6-0 run and held a 24-19 lead at the intermission.

Maryknoll made a 15-6 run to take its largest lead of the game at 39-24 on two Kamakana Winquist free throws at the 2:57 mark in the third quarter, but Iolani answered with a 14-2 run of its own to pull within 41-38 at the start of the fourth quarter.

The Spartans scored the first seven points of the final quarter, which was part of a 14-5 run that ultimately sealed the win for them.

"The difference in the fourth quarter was intensity," Gilmore said. "We came out with more intensity than them — in the third quarter they did — but the third quarter is always our really bad quarter. We have to fix that before states and the rest of the ILH."

Ikaika Phillip scored 21 points with 11 rebounds and Zach Buscher added 15 points to lead Iolani.

Maryknoll hosts Kamehameha Wednesday and top-ranked Punahou Friday, while Iolani visits Punahou Wednesday and hosts Saint Louis Saturday. The Spartans and Raiders play again in the ILH second round on Jan. 29.
