Scrappy Iolani gave Westview all it could handle in the first half of play in the third place game of the Iolani Girls Classic.

Then Jaime Nader took matters into her own hands.

Nader, a University of Tennesee commit, did work in the second half against the host Raiders, scoring 22 of her game-high 29 points to propel the Wildcats of Portland, Oregon to a 55-41 victory.

Westview used an 18-6 scoring advantage in the third quarter to take control over the host team Iolani, led by Nader's 13 in the period. She also added 12 boards and 6 steals in game, giving her a double-double average throughout the tournament.

"Very happy with our performance," said Westview head coach Lindsay Strothers. "We had only played one real game before coming here, and we got five new players here to the program so its about getting used to each other and learning how to work hard together.

Iolani fell behind early, trailing 20-10 after the first quarter as Bria Thames and Nader combined for 11 of the Wildcats' total.

But the host team responded in the second, outscoring the Wildcats by an 11-4 margin in the second quarter, allowing just one field goal, a three-ball by Nader, trailing just 24-21 after two periods of play.

Keys for the strong play of Iolani, particularly in that second period, were a pressing defense coupled with aggressive play toward the basket on the offensive, as the smaller Raiders neutralized the decided height advantage of the Wildcats by getting to the free throw line.

"When you can compete with girls of those caliber, and battle and keep your composure and execute, and have positive outcomes it will carry us far into the season," remarked Iolani head coach Dean Young.

The Wildcats were forced to sit starters Dana Bertz as well as Nared in stretches due to foul trouble, but the Raiders were not able to capitalize on the scoreboard however, as of the ten attempts in the second from the charity stripe, Iolani made just 3.

Foul shooting woes aside, noteworthy was the fact that the Raiders kept pace with the Wildcats despite being the services of starting guard, Pua Kahalehoe, who went down with an apparent injury in the early stages of the first quarter and did not return to the game.

Iolani employed a platoon-strategy for the duration of the contest, something that the Raiders do regularly, though the Kahalehoe injury did force some adjustments to the rotations, and got some impressive production from the bench.

"Pua is a big part of our team, so it was difficult to make that adjustment," said Young, "but other girls got the opportunity to step up and play."

In particular, the play of Camy Aguinaldo was a big boost offensively, as she fearlessly attacked the basket, drawing key fouls on the Wildcats' bigs, finishing with 5 points off the bench. Also of note was post Skylar Nakata, who added four points.

For the game, Raiders' reserves outscored the Wildcats' bench, 17-5.

Leading the way for Iolani was senior post Jade Botelho, who scored a team-high 15 points and 7 rebounds, and more than held her own against the much taller Wildcats' bigs.

"We definitely got better, especially the posts, they (the players) are big, so it was a good matchup for us posts. Even the guards they learned how to handle the ball better, even with faster girls picking them (up defensively). Overall, I think we got a lot better." said Botelho.
