December is here and basketball is in the air.
The girls' prep hoops season has been underway for a few weeks now and some of the leagues open regular-season play this week. Meanwhile, the boys will be on full display with several tournament on Oahu alone this week kicking off Thursday.
Reigning Division II state champion Saint Francis along with Interscholastic League of Honolulu D1 contendors Kamehameha and Iolani headline the field at the Surfrider Classic, hosted by Kailua. The Saints open the tournament with a 3:30 p.m. quarterfinal against Waipahu Thursday. The Warriors will take on Waianae in the 5 p.m. game, while the Raiders face Lahainaluna at 6:30 p.m. Host-Kailua meets Iolani II in the late quarterfinal.
Over at Radford, the 15th Annual James Alegre Invitational also starts Thursday with four quarterfinal matchups. Pearl City plays Farrington at 3 p.m., Leilehua-Roosevelt at 4:30 p.m., Radford-Mid Pacific at 6 p.m. and Punahou-Kalani at 7:30 p.m.
The McKinley Black and Gold Classic gets underway Thursday with three games. Kaimuki meets Saint Louis at 5 p.m., Kapolei faces University High at 6:30 p.m. and McKinley takes on D1 state runner-up Maryknoll at 8 p.m.
Finally, the Saber Basketball Invitational tips off Thursday with four games. A junior varsity game between Campbell and Nanakuli is set for 3 p.m. with varsity games to follow between Christian Academy and Anuenue, Nanakuli and Kalaheo and Molokai and Campbell.
All four tournaments continue Friday and wrap up Saturday.
