Through the skies - ILH

The third part of a five-part series takes a look at some of the best receivers in the ILH.

Keoni-Kordell Makekau, Iolani
The sophomore wideout leads his team with 522 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 34 catches in 2013. Makekau caught seven passes for a career-high 152 yards in a 19-3 win over Damien Saturday. He is averaging 15.4 yards per reception and has caught at least one pass in every game this season. Makekau caught seven balls for 110 yards and two touchdowns in his varsity debut back in a week one win over Kalani. He has also made four field goals while sharing the placekicking duties with Jordan Genovia.

Kanawai Noa, Punahou
The junior became a household name with a breakout 2012 season. Noa led the state with 1,289 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns on 59 catches. He isn't quite on the same torrid pace he was last year, but still ranks fifth in Division I in 2013 with 502 receiving yards on 22 receptions and four touchdowns. Noa depended on his speed last year as he got most of his yardage on deep passes from Larry Tuileta, but has improved his route-running and has been targeted more and more over the middle this season.

Devan Stubblefield, Saint Louis
Stubblefield has caught 20 passes, including seven touchdowns — both team-highs — for 396 yards as the Crusaders' main Z-receiver. He was held without a catch in a 49-13 win over Iolani last week, but has at least five grabs in three other games this season. He had 133 receiving yards and three touchdowns in a season-opening win over Baldwin and six grabs for 117 yards with a touchdown a week later in a win over Kahuku. Stubblefield, who has greatly improved his hands this season, is particularly adept at getting open against zone defenses.

Chad Hanaoka, Iolani
The senior has increased his workload as the go-to-receiver in the Raiders' offense this year. Hanaoka's biggest games this season have come against the stiffest competition. He caught seven passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns against Leilehua, 10 passes for 69 yards and a touchdown against Kamehameha and eight passes for 64 yards against Saint Louis, but Iolani lost all three games. He is a favorite of both Austin Jim On and Easton Tsubata on quick screen passes to the flats and short forward passes behind the line of scrimmage on the Raiders' fly-sweeps.

Drew Kobayashi, Saint Louis
The sophomore wideout operates primarily out of the X-receiver position to the wide left side of the formation, opposite of Stubblefield. Kobayashi is mainly a deep threat in the Crusaders' run-and-shoot attack and is averaging an astounding 33.3 yards per reception. He had a season-high 129 receiving yards against Kamehameha, but left late in the game after he was hit following an incompletion. Kobayashi rebounded nicely two weeks later with a three-catch, 105-yard performance against Iolani.

William Young, Kamehameha
There aren't a whole lot of catches to go around in the Warriors' run-heavy, West Coast offense, but Young has proven to be one of quarterback Noah Sua-Godinet's favorite targets. At 6-foot-3, Young is a nice complement to 5-foot-8 Kaulana Werner on the other side of the formation. He broke out with six receptions for 123 yards against Kealakehe back in week 3. Young caught two of his three touchdowns passes this season against the Waveriders. Young has been quiet of late with just four grabs for 25 yards in Kamehameha's last three games.

Allan Cui III, Saint Louis
The junior slotback ranks third on his team with 179 receiving yards, but has caught 18 passes — just two behind Stubblefield. Cui III, who also returns punts, is not just fast straight ahead, but also quite shifty and can change directions on a dime. His best game came in a nine-catch, 81-yard effort against Kahuku, in which he also caught a pair of touchdown passes.

Chase Kanekuni, Iolani
The 5-foot-9 senior is third on the team in both receptions (21) and receiving yards (279 yards), but has been held out of the end zone this season. Kanekuni had his best game of 2013 last week in a win over Damien with eight catches for 90 yards.

Kelii Kaanapu, Damien
Kaanapu has been the favorite target of quarterback Syles Choy with 23 catches for 355 yards and four touchdowns. The 5-foot-10 senior had four grabs for 110 yards and a touchdown in the Monarchs' season-opening win over Kamehameha-Maui and is averaging 15.4 yards per reception.

Trevor Caspillo, Damien
The 5-foot-6 senior is the other wide receiver opposite of Kaanapu and has been a viable safety valve for Choy. Caspillo has 19 catches for 239 yards for the season. Both Kaanapu and Caspillo have benefitted from the effective running of Edwin Aumua, which has opened up the passing game for the Monarchs.

Tsubasa Brennan, Pac-Five
Three receivers are tied for the team-lead with 23 receptions, including Brennan, who has a team-high 279 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He has 95 receiving yards on five catches in a season-opening loss to Radford and followed that up with an eight-catch performance at Aiea a week later.
