'EWA BEACH - A thundering Hurd and a fortuitous fumble recovery helped Campbell rally past Wai'anae, 32-24, Friday night in the there's-never-a-dull-moment O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West football at the Sabers' field.

Quarterback Isaac Hurd completed 16 of 24 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for two more TDs to keep the Sabers' hopes alive for a division title.

But Kea Cambra's fumble recovery in the end zone after a high snap from center with Wai'anae in punt formation provided the go-ahead score with nine minutes, 38 seconds left in the game.

The win sets up next Saturday's matchup between Campbell (4-1 overall, 2-1 Red West), ranked eighth in the ScoringLive/OC 16 Power Rankings, and No. 4 Mililani (4-1, 3-0) that will give the winner an edge for the OIA tournament seedings. Kapolei's upset of Leilehua assures the West will go down to the wire in ensuing weeks.

"This is the West," Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said. "Every game is a big game. That's how we treat every game: This game means more than any other game we play. We didn't look past (Wai'anae). We watched them last week against Leilehua; they dominated that game, so knew coming in we were going to have our work cut out for us."

For the Seariders (4-2, 2-2), the loss comes a week after they stunned Leilehua, which was shocked itself against Kapolei.

"It puts us back in the hole," Wai'anae coach Dan Matsumoto said.

With Wai'anae holding a 24-19 lead late in the fourth quarter, the Seariders lined up to punt, facing fourth-and-8 from their 39. But the snap from center sailed over the punter Stanton Spencer's head. Spencer retrieved the ball, but was chased toward the end zone from the oncoming rush. Then he seemed to toss the ball, perhaps to a team, but there were only Sabers in the vicinity and  Cambra came out with the ball for the go-ahead TD.

"It was a chaotic thing, just looking for the ball," Cambra said. "I wasn't the first guy (to get to the ball). I luckily got in there at the right time. I was fighting with my teammates; we were all fighting for the ball. Luckily, it came in my arms."

The Seariders took a 17-7 lead into the half, scoring their last 10 points off of Campbell turnovers.

With the game tied at 7, an interception by Niko Kala-Mahiai in the end zone led to a touchback. The Seariders rolled down field, settling for Stanton Spencer's 20-yard field goal to give Wai'anae a 10-7 lead.

The Sabers then fumbled the ensuing kickoff at their 13. Three plays later, fullback Mahvan Tau scored on a 1-yard run to make it 17-7 with 1:13 left in the half.

"The first half, we were down," Hurd said. "We just had to kick it up and stay positive because if we didn't, then how were we going to come back?"

Before the fumble from punt formation, the quarterbacks from both teams were putting on a show.

With the threat of the run, Wai'anae's Kekoa Kaluhiokalani was able to burn the Sabers for TD passes of 52 and 12 yards to Pookela Noa-Nakamoto, who had five receptions for 143 of Kaluhiokalani's 164 passing yards.

But there was no stopping Hurd, who used his legs and arm to keep the Sabers close. He cushioned the Sabers' lead with his 25-yard TD pass to Himan on a bubble screen to the left with 1:01 left. The drive was sustained with a crucial 16-yard pickup when Hurd found Jayce Bantolina open on third-and-8 from the Sabers' 35. Tyler Subia's PAT gave the Sabers an eight-point lead.

"It was a read, down and distance," Hurd said of his pass to Bantolina. "So whatever we had to get, he just had to get open and get the ball there."

A poor kickoff gave Wai'anae the ball at Campbell's 46. But on second-and-10, Kaluhioklani went deep to Noa-Nakamoto. But safety Solomon Matautia intercepted the ball with 34 seconds left at the Sabers' 5, where Campbell took a knee to run the clock out.

The Sabers' defense was staunch against the option, holding the Seariders to 143 yards rushing. One difference for the Sabers was a goal-line stand on Wai'anae's first series of the game. Kaluhiokalani had 55 yards after his first four carries, but ended with 68 by his 13th try. Fullback Tau had 64 yards and tailback Jemery Willes had 48.

"We really had to be disciplined in what we were doing," Amosa said. "Everybody has their responsibilities."

But the Seariders were able to keep the Sabers honest against the option. On three of Noa-Nakamoto's long passes (52, 38 and 35), Kaluhiokalani caught the Sabers' in single coverage. But the Sabers did intercept him twice (Waylen Lindsey and Matautia).

After a scoreless first quarter, the Sabers scored first, driving 57 yards on six plays with Hurd scoring from 11 yards. He faked to tailback Austin May, who went right, and Hurd went left to the end zone to give the Sabers a 7-0 lead with 9:57 in the first half.

But Wai'anae stormed back on Kaluhiokalani's 52-yard TD pass over the middle to tie the game at 7 at 8:56.

The Seariders increased their lead into the half after converting the two Campbell turnovers into scores to take a 17-7 lead at the half.

Campbell received the second-half kickoff and promptly moved 85 yards in 10 plays with Hurd scoring on an 11-yard run on a straight dive up the middle on fourth-and-1 to pull Campbell to 17-13

But the Seariders bolted back on their ensuing series, scoring on Kaluhiokalani's 12-yard TD pass to Noa-Nakamoto to open the game up at 24-13 with 2:46 in the third quarter.

But that was the last Wai'anae was heard from the rest of the game. Campbell came back quickly with Hurd's 80-yard TD pass to Himan to pull the Sabers to 24-19 with 1:50 left in the third quarter.

Then the roof caved in on the Seariders in the fourth quarter, beginning with the fumble in the end zone and later Hurd's 25-yard TD pass to Himan with 1:01 left in the game.
