MAKIKI - Farrington offset 21 penalties by rolling up 484 yards in offense to knock off Kailua, 31-14, Saturday night at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

The win pulls Farrington into a tie for first with Kahuku in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East. Both teams are 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the East. The Surfriders fell to 1-4 and 1-2.

Sanele Lavatai, primarily a linebacker, rushed for 159 yards and three touchdowns. In fact, he was not tackled on his first two carries of the game, scoring from 73 and 14 yards. He also scored on a 4-yard run. Lavatai suffered a concussion in a non-league game against Kamehameha, but a bye before the Govs' Red East season opener was enough rest for him to return last weekend.

"I just saw (that) my O-Linemen opened those holes for me," Lavatai said of his 73-yard run. "Saw that wide-open gap and ran straight up."

Another running back, Sitaleki Hufanga rushed for 113 yards on just six carries. He lost a TD of his own when he broke loose on what would've been a 45-yard TD run, but the ball was stripped by a Kailua defender at about the 15 and into the end zone for a touchback.

Quarterback Montana Liana, who missed last week's game against Castle recovering from a knee procedure, completed 10 of 16 passes for 205 yards, including a 14-yard TD to DJ Chaffin. He also had completions of 70 and 54 yards.

Defensively, the Governors held the Surfriders to negative 3 yards. Kailua QB Noah Auld completed 23 of 40 passes for 264 yards and two TDs, but suffered interceptions from Roger Boyd and Jacob McEnroe. He also was sacked eight times, four by defensive end Breiden Fehoko.

"Looks like we're making some progress," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said.

Farrington's downfall was the 21 penalties totaling 175 yards. Nine of them were for encroachment.
A third of Kailua's 21 first downs were from penalties, which kept the Surfriders within striking range early.

"So sloppy," Okimoto said. "So, so sloppy. But it forces us to work hard at practice…I don't think we ever had that many penalties."

After Kailua lost the ball on downs at Farrington's 23 to start the game, the Govs marched down and scored on its first series on Liana's 14-yard TD pass to DJ Chaffin on a left-side screen. Kekoa Sasaoka's PAT made it 7-0 with 2:07 in the first quarter.

Kailua was unable to score on its next three series, failing to capitalize on a Farrington fumble on one of them.

Lavatai then broke loose on his 73-yard TD run with 6:30 left in the half to increase Farrington's lead to 14-0.

Kailua managed to drive to the Farrington 12 on its ensuing series that ended with a missed field goal try of 28 yards by Naia Graham.

Farrington, aided by Liana's 70-yard completion to Enele Scanlan, scored on its next series on Lavatai's second carry of the game, a 14-yard TD to make ti 21-0 at the half.

Kailua opened the second half with a failed onside kick attempt, giving Farrington the ball at its 47. But the Govs - hampered by a holding penalty that nullified Lavatai's apparent 32-yard TD run - had their drive stalled by a missed 48-yard field goal try by Sasaoka.

Kailua finally scored with 2:39 left in the third quarter on Auld's 25-yard TD pass to Kamuela Scheer to make it 21-7.

This time, Kailua recovered its onside kick, but was unable to do anything and punted. Farrington, backed up to its 10, went the distance with the aide of a 54-yard pass from Liana to Akui Hughes, scored on Lavatai's 4-yard run to make it 28-7 with 11:38 in the game.

Kailua scored on its next series on a 24-yard TD pass from Auld to Makaio Gaspar with 8:36 left to pull the Surfriders to 28-14.

Kailua turned over the ball on its next two series on interceptions by Roger Boyd and Jacob McEnroe. The first interception led to Sasaoka's 41-yard field goal with 2:20 left to make it 31-14.

"It's an ugly win, but we'll take it," Okimoto said.
