HONOLULU - Jordan Ross is making quite the name for himself.

The sophomore running back rushed for 206 yards and four touchdowns to carry Iolani to a 36-0 rout of Kamehameha-Hawaii Saturday afternoon in a non-league game at Kozuki Stadium.

The reigning six-time Division II state champion Raiders amassed 327 yards of total offense, including 213 rushing, to improve to 2-1. The Warriors, who were D2 runners-up in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation last year, fell to 1-1.

"The line did very well today. They opened up a lot of holes for me and I did what I could," said Ross, who was held to no gain on his first carry and lost a yard on his second. "I just ran. They don't get enough credit, so I'd like to give all the credit to the line today. They go unnoticed pretty much all the time."

After a 5-yard gain on his third carry, Ross caught fire, scoring on his next three attempts. He ran for touchdowns of 22, 32 and 46 yards in the first quarter and added an 84-yard score in the second. For the game, Ross averaged 25.8 yards per rush.

"He has that potential and all the ability to be an explosive kind of player, but again, he's young and he will make some mistakes — he made some mistakes today — but he makes up for it in talent," Raiders coach Wendell Look said.

Iolani's defense did its part, allowing just 247 yards of total offense by Kamehameha-Hawaii and forcing six turnovers. The Raiders recycled three of the takeaways into touchdowns.

"Our defense played well today," Look said. "Whenever we can get turnovers, it makes it a whole lot easier on the offensive side of the ball and it gives our team momentum that I thought we built on."

Iolani shut down the Warriors' passing game, limiting them to 70 yards on 7-of-21 passing. Wyatt Maa and Kevin Togami each had two interceptions and Kevin Matsuoka also picked off a pass.

"It was just coaching — (defensive coordinator Delbert) Tengan got us ready, put us in the right position to make plays and our defensive line did a good job of putting pressure on their quarterback to get us those picks," said Maa, a junior linebacker/safety.

Ross capped the Raiders' opening drive of the game with a 22-yard touchdown run down the left sideline. The drive covered 95 yards on 10 plays. Tamatane Aga ran in the two-point conversion and Iolani took an 8-0 lead midway the first quarter.

Maa intercepted a Micah Kanehailua pass on the Warriors' next drive and two plays later, Ross recycled the turnover into a 32-yard touchdown run. Kanehailua scored on a fly sweep around the left edge with four minutes and two seconds left in the first. Jordan Genovia kicked the extra point to extend Iolani's lead to 15-0.

Ross gave the Raiders a 22-0 advantage a few minutes later on a 46-yard scamper to paydirt. Chad Hanaoka motioned from the left side of the formation pre-snap on the misdirection play to open up the middle of the field for Ross.

Kamehameha-Hawaii turned it over one play into its ensuing drive and, one play into the second quarter, Austin Jim On found Hanaoka for a 17-yard touchdown pass. Genovia kicked the PAT to make the score, 29-0.

Kanehailua's third interception thrown in the first half ended up in the hands of Maa. On the very next play, Ross took the handoff from Jim On and made a move at the line of scrimmage before bursting through a big hole on his way to an 84-yard touchdown run.

Iolani led, 36-0, at halftime. Ross had rushed for 206 yards and four touchdowns by the intermission.

"We pretty much look at every game as the most important game of the season, so we just come out every week firing," said Ross, who is 5 feet, 8 inches and 164 pounds. "We came out and pretty much executed our game plan. We worked really hard in practice this week."

Ross rushed for 101 yards and three touchdowns on just seven carries in his varsity debut back on Aug. 10, a 51-36 season-opening win over Kalani. He now has rushed for 379 yards and seven touchdowns on only 32 attempts.

Jim On, who is in a battle with Easton Tsubata for the starting quarterback job, played about three quarters before giving way to third-stringer Steele Rezentes. Tsubata was suited up for the game, but did not play, as he was nursing an injury suffered in a 56-35 loss to Leilehua last week.

Running back Ina Teofilo led Kamehameha-Hawaii with 118 rushing yards on 19 carries and Matthew Chun recorded two interceptions. The Warriors host Konawaena Friday in both teams BIIF opener.
