Hawaiian Electric Game of the Week
Campbell opens with 21-7 win over Kaiser

HAWAII KAI – The Campbell Sabers made the long trek from Ewa Beach to East Honolulu, battled storm-like conditions and came away with a win on opening night.

Isaac Hurd threw a pair of touchdown passes – both to Kainoa Perry – and ran for another to lead Campbell to a 21-7 win over Kaiser before a crowd of about 1,000 spectators at Kaiser Stadium Friday night. The Sabers (1-0) built up a three-touchdown lead by midway through the second quarter and held off the Cougars (0-1) in a scoreless second half.

“Anytime we come out with a 'W,' that's what we want,” Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said. “Everything that happened tonight – the rain, the execution – we can correct it, but the idea is to give us a chance to win at the end of the game.”

Hurd, a senior who was a part-time starter at quarterback the past two seasons, played the entire game. He finished 9-of-18 passing for 80 yards without an interception.

Both teams dealt with difficult playing conditions with strong winds and a steady rain most of the night. Despite the unfavorable weather, the Sabers did not commit a turn the ball over.

“It was tough to handle the football – we didn't bring our rubber balls thinking it would be a nice day – but, I'm very happy with the way Isaac controlled the offense,” Amosa said of Hurd, who also ran 11 times for 36 yards. “I told him, 'This is your offense this year. You run it and you do what you think is going to benefit us.' A couple times he ran the ball because he couldn't grip the ball, but you see what he can do, he's so fast – he can throw it, he can run it – he can turn a bad play into a good play.”

Hurd opened the scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run, that was set-up by a 24-yard Austin May rush, late in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Hurd found Perry for an 8-yard scoring strike to cap an 11-play, 69-yard drive. The PAT was no good to make it 13-0. The drive was extended on a pair of Kaiser defensive pass interference penalties and a fourth-down pass from Hurd to Perry.

“I just try to get open and catch the ball – (Hurd) threw a nice pass to me,” Perry said.

Abiel Taito forced a Kaiser fumble two plays later, which was recovered by teammate Zibrex Cabel at the Sabers' 34-yard line. Hurd and the Campbell offense took over from there and marched 66 yards, capped by his 23-yard touchdown pass to Perry.

On the scoring play, Hurd faked a handoff right, then rolled out of the pocket to his left and found a wide-open Perry along the left sideline.

Perry said the Sabers felt like they had something to prove aginst the Cougars.

“We came here with a chip on our shoulder and we felt like we were the underdogs in this game,” Perry said. “They have a lot of the top prospects in the state, so this means everything to us right now.”

Kaiser scored its lone touchdown on a 17-yard run by Fitou Fisiiahi, who finished with a team-high 36 rushing yards on seven carries. Quarterback Lii Karratti, who was making his Kaiser debut after a record-setting year at Konawaena in 2012, finished 10-of-24 passing for 93 yards with one interception.

The Cougars, who had just 120 yards of total offense, committed four turnovers, including three fumbles. They were 0 of 9 on third downs and recorded just 10 first downs for the game, including four due to Campbell penalties. The teams were penalized a combined 19 times for 214 yards.
