'EWA BEACH - Jasten Smeigh showed no signs of rust after a near month-long break by firing a one-hitter to lead host Campbell over Kaiser, 3-1, Thursday in a quarterfinal of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red baseball tournament.

The Sabers (12-1), the West's top seed, will meet defending champion Kailua (9-4) in Friday's 6:30 p.m. semifinal at Hans L'Orange Park. The East second seed Surfriders needed 12 innings to beat Pearl City, 2-1, in another quarterfinal.

In the 3:30 p.m. semifinal, Leilehua (6-8) will play Mililani (8-6). The West sixth seed Mules, who stunned East third seed Moanalua Wednesday, beat West third seed Waipahu, 3-1, while West fourth seed Mililani stunned East top seed Castle, 1-0, in other quarterfinals Thursday.

The semifinals will be aired live on OC 16 (channel 12).

Campbell, Kailua, Mililani and Leilehua have secured Division I state tournament berths.

Waipahu (8-5) will visit Castle (9-4) and Kaiser (8-6) will visit Pearl City (9-5) Friday in fifth-place semifinals. The winners will get the OIA's final two state berths, while the losers will be done for the season.

Smeigh, who had sprained his ankle during fielding drills at practice about a month ago, made his first start since March 30 in a 2-1 win against Waipahu. He said he missed a week of practice and was seen on crutches in another game. He had been rehabilitating his ankle since then. He said he had not practiced until this past week.

"It felt good," Smeigh said. "It's playoffs. I'm really hyped-up. I was ready to play today."

Indeed. The right-hander walked one and hit a batter. The only hit he allowed was an RBI flare single to left-center off cleanup hitter Jake Torigoe, who was coming off an monster game against 'Aiea the day before. The run Smeigh allowed was unearned because the batter reached on an error.Smeigh, who said his slider was effective, struck out six.

"i was telling our guys that was probably the best guy we've faced in the OIA so far," Kaiser coach Mark Rasmussen said. "What was impressive was he could throw his off-speed on any count. After about the third, fourth inning, he started doing that. That guy's tough."

After allowing the RBI single to Torigoe, Smeigh retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced. The only batter to get on during that span was Makana Lyman, on a fielding error by third baseman Wesley Mendoza

Campbell staked Smeigh to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Mendoza doubled to left with one out, but had to freeze at second when Dylan Ramie reached on a flare to left-center. Dewayne Sprinkel tried to bunt his way on, but got Mendoza forced out at third, keeping runners at first and second. Ramie scored when Alii Pedrina reached safely on shortstop Shawn Miyashiro. But Kaiser starting pitcher Makana Lyman retired Brannon Okinaka on a grounder to third to minimize the damage.

The Sabers padded their lead in the third. Rayven Kahana led off with a walk, but was caught stealing second before Tryzen Patricio walked. Courtesy runner Zachary Recolan took third on Smeigh's single to left. Smeigh's courtesy runner Austin Mariano stole second, as Kaiser catcher Kelan Yoshioka fake-pumped a throw to second, but looked back the runner at third. Dorrien Hermosura grounded out to second to score Recolan and move Mariano to third. A wild pitch with Mendoza at the plate allowed Mariano to score to make it 3-0 before Mariano flied out to end the inning.

The Cougars scored in the top of the fourth. Jordan Simao reached first when left fielder Sprinkel dropped a fly to shallow left where third baseman Mendoza and shortstop Ramie converged on the ball. Simao then took second on a passed ball on what appeared to be a pitchout before Lyman struck out. But Torigoe's single scored Simao to pull the Cougars to 3-1. Smeigh settled and got Michael Austin to pop out to short and Aaron Oda to foul out to first to end the inning.
