West sixth seed Pearl City hung on to stun East third seed Kaimuki, 3-0, in a single elimination game.

In the first inning, Kaimuki's pitcher Ehlen Awaya walked Pearl City's Hope Casarez, who later stole second base while Makana Kekaulike was at the plate. Taylor Kawakami came up next and blasted a two-out, RBI double to the left outfield that brought in Casarez, making it 1-0.

"I think when you score first in the game, you put pressure on the opposing team. That is something we didn't do too much this year," said Pearl City coach Keoki Behic.

Strong pitching and fielding by both sides followed the Chargers' opening inning salvo, and persisted all the way to the seventh inning, as Pearl City starter Kristin Frost had six strikeouts for the game while her counterpart Ehlen Awaya had four strikeouts.

"She (Frost) pitched well and our team didn't have any fielding errors," said Behic.

"I've seen her pitch better," said Kaimuki coach Chris Awaya on Ehlen. "She missed a couple pitches, I always told her one mistake here and there when you play a better team, they will hurt you. It did today, but hopefully she grows from it."

In the seventh inning, Pearl City created some breathing room with one swing of the bat, as Nat Kang fought off a few Awaya offerings to keep the at-bat alive and eventually found a pitch she liked, crushing a two-run homerun over the fence to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead.

"At first I was scared because I thought got out on my at-bat. I just felt I needed to step up for my team since we were kind of down. I wanted this win and my goal is to make it to states. I felt I needed to shorten the bat, meet the ball at its spot and drive it somewhere," said Nat Kang.

"Although Nat has been struggling all year long, she comes into practice early and works on the weekends on her swings. She really deserves this and she understands what it takes," said Behic.

In the last of the seventh, Kaimuki got on base after Kaela Nera drew a leadoff walk, but Frost came right back, striking out Seplynn Aikau on the next at-bat. Frost then got Ku'uipo Sefo to ground out to the third baseman before retiring Canny Aikau swinging to end the game.

"I want to thank my defense and they helped out a lot and I stuck to the pitching plan. They made really nice plays and the outfield and catcher got my back," said Kristin Frost.

"My main goal as a catcher is to keep Frosty confident and tell her that the defense will back her up. It was a team effort," added Taylor Kawakami.

Kaimuki who lost a coin flip to Kailua for the East's second seed, ends their season at 9-4.

"In our team meeting, I felt that they played well despite a few mistakes here and there. They came a long way from day 1 and I saw a lot of improvement and told them to hold their heads high. As far as next year, we'll try and change things up," said Awaya.
