'Iolani blasted 4th seeded Lahainaluna in the HHSAA Girls Division 1 quarterfinals, 60-39, setting up a rematch of last year's title game with once-again number 1 seed Konawaena Thursday at 5 pm.

"I thought we played well defensively, I thought we contained their penetration. For the most part I thought we played good team ball," said 'Iolani head coach Eddie Maruyama.

In the first quarter, 'Iolani took an 8-5 lead after a layup by Sheyla Pua Kahalehoe. Lahainaluna’s Aloha Salem tied the game at 8 with a three pointer.

Lahainaluna took the lead, 12-10 after two free throws by Loke Basques. However, 'Iolani reclaimed the lead and went up 17-14 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, 'Iolani opened up with a 6-0 run. Salem made another three pointer to cut the Lady Lunas deficit to 6, 23-17.

'Iolani’s Sheyla Pua Kahalehoe hit a three pointer before the buzzer to put the Raiders up 10, 32-22 going into halftime.

In the third quarter, 'Iolani once again jumped out to a fast start and went up 40-22.

However, the Lady Lunas answered back with a 6-0 run off of layups from Lindsey Bates and seemed to gain momentum.

"You got to play hard for four quarters. But the way they (Lahainaluna) play, you have expect runs from them. They play extremely hard, they’re scrappy they press, trap and come after you," commented Maruyama.

'Iolani responded and went up 44-30 after a jumper by Abreanna Johnson-Edwards and Lahainaluna called timeout. 'Iolani scored 8 points to close out the third quarter and went up comfortably, 54-34.

'Iolani’s 22 point quarter made a big difference and Maruyama was pleased by his team’s performance. "We had that nice momentum shot at the end of the half and I thought our girls played well in the third quarter," said Maruyama.

In the fourth quarter, 'Iolani went up by as much as 20 points and reserves from both teams got playing time.

It was a quiet night for 'Iolani’s Abreanna Johnson-Edwards, who finished with 6 points, but she managed to get her teammates involved and set them up for scores.

Alex Masaquel led the Raiders with 17 points and Sheyla Pua Kahalehoe added 14 points including 2 three pointers.
