Offensive Player of the Year: Teani Arakawa, Kekaulike, MF, Jr.
Despite her diminutive size, the 5-foot-1 Arakawa proved to be a big factor in the success of Na Alii this season.

Never was that more evident than a three-day stretch in early February, when she dazzled fans at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex with her wide array of skills on the pitch. Arakawa threw opponents into a tizzy out of her central-midfield position and, in the process, drew the respect of many coaches.

"She is a very dynamic midfielder," Kamehameha coach Melissa Moore said. "Her movement off the ball, obviously her technical ability is really good, but just her high work-rate provided so much to her team."

Moore's Warriors managed to fend off an Arakawa-led Kekaulike team, 1-0, in the Division I state final.

"It's often times rare to find a midfielder that has that high of a work rate for an entire game," Moore continued. "Her movement off the ball is huge, her ability to find her teammates and then get the ball back — which is what a midfielder is supposed to do — and she distributes the ball very well, so she's a very good player."

Arakawa was tabbed Player of the Year of the Maui Interscholastic League by The Maui News as a sophomore last year and has only elevated her game since then.

"This year she really matured," Kekaulike coach Gundi Dancil said. "Last year she was a sophomore being a captain and she was more quiet and kind of led by example, but she came out this year and she led by example and voice this year. I think she's maturing into an all-around player."

Dancil explained how Na Alii were at their best when Arakawa had the ball at her feet.

"She has very good vision on the field and if she doesn't have an option to score, she'll put the ball out there for someone to score and that's where we capitalized a lot this year, where she'd go in, look for the option first, if there's no option, go in, try to get into a dangerous position, then the other girls would come in and be that option for her to be in a good place to score and that's what she did for us this year," Dancil said. "Teani, she's a force for us and very unselfish."

Arakawa found options in her team's 2-0 win over Pearl City in the state semifinals. She assisted on both second-half goals to lift Kekaulike to its only state championship appearance in program history.

The junior was one of four players from Kekaulike selected to the all-tournament team.

Defensive Player of the Year: Tausani Tavale, Kamehameha, D, Sr.
After missing all of her junior season due to a torn ACL, Tavale didn't miss a beat in her return to the pitch this year.

The 5-foot-5 center-back was unquestionably the defensive leader for the Warriors, who allowed only four goals in 13 games this season. They turned in eight clean sheets on the year, including their final three games — on back-to-back-to-back nights, no less — in the run-up to a second straight Division I state championship.

"Part of her job is, as a senior, leading out there and she's not the most vocal player, but once that whistle blows, she's in it 100 percent," Kamehameha coach Melissa Moore said.

Tavale served as the last line of defense in front of freshman goalkeeper Marley Roe and also helped to alleviate the loss of outside-back Carley Park — last year's All-Hawaii Defensive Player of the Year — to a knee injury that wiped out what would have been her junior season.

"We didn't have Tausani one year and we have Carley and then we don't have Carley one year, but we have Tausani," Moore said. "They're two very different players, but I think Tausani knew the position she was in — just like Carley did last year — that she had to elevate her game and Tausani did that."

As a sophomore two years ago, Tavale earned All-Hawaii First Team honors. She capped her off comeback by helping Kamehameha claim its 10th state title.

"Pure grit out of Tausani, that's for sure," Moore said. "For her to come back after her ACL and play the way she did her senior year, I mean, she said she was gonna do it, she said she was gonna be back and she came back and she came back better than ever."

Tavale was one of six Warriors selected to all-tournament team at February's state championships and earned co-Defensive MVP honors in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

"She did well for Kapalama," said Kekaulike coach Gundi Dancil, whose team lost to Tavale and the Warriors, 1-0, in the state final.

"She's very physical. She played us physical and managed to keep us off," Dancil added. "The only way we got away from her was we had to have our outside-mids take the ball down and try to get in a lane where they can score so that we can pull the defenders out and create a bigger lane, but she kept that lane closed for us."

Soccer is not the only sport that Tavale excels in. She is a two-time All-Hawaii selection in softball and was a First Team outfielder as a sophomore.

Tavale will play soccer for Hawaii Pacific next fall.

Coach of the Year: Gundi Dancil, Kekaulike
In his 25th season as coach, Dancil guided Na Alii to an 11-1-1 overall record and the program's first trip to the state championship match. Included were a 9-0-1 mark in the Maui Interscholastic League and a third consecutive league title.

Kekaulike won a string of seven straight matches leading up to the state final — all of them by shut out — highlighted by a 1-0 upset of then-No. 2 Punahou in the state quarterfinal round and followed by a 2-0 semifinal win over seventh-ranked Pearl City one night later.

Dancil is the reigning MIL Coach of the Year, as tabbed by The Maui News. He has served as Kekaulike coach since the upcountry school opened in 1995.
