The Second Annual Kalakaua @ Moanalua Basketball Camp was held at Moanalua High School Gym from Monday, June 4 to Thursday, June 7, 2012.

In the camp's second year, the number of participants exceeded 260, showing the support Hawaii has for the expertise of legendary coach Dennis Agena of Kalakaua Clinic. Other coaches on hand were Mike Taylor (former Punahou Coach); Greg Tacon (Moanalua) and Pat Wetzel (Leilehua). In addition, over 40 high school basketball players served as counselors for the campers.

The camp focused on skill development, fundamentals of basketball, and character education. However, there was a little twist to the camp this year.

Coach Kenny Patton (University of Hawaii/Oakland Raiders) of Patton Sports Performance worked with the kids throughout the camp. Coach Patton's instruction focused on speed, strength, quickness, form, and technique. "The Kalakaua Camp was instructional, exciting, and original. Without a doubt, it was much more than a camp. It was a basketball experience that will continue to move Hawaii Basketball to the next level!"

Coach Taylor was overwhelmed by the amount of campers present. "Coach and I love to teach the game of basketball! The kids were so enthusiastic. They worked their tails off! It is always an honor to teach the game of basketball to kids who demonstrate the same love that we all have."

Coach Agena was also pleased. "After 4 days, we can really see improvements in the kids' skills. They worked so hard and wanted to get better. We are always thankful that parents trust us to teach their children the game of basketball. We are so proud of the lessons the students and counselors are learning. Our camp serves as a vehicle that not only teaches the game of basketball, but also teaches the kids about the game of life. The coaches mentor the counselors; the counselors mentor the campers."
